Celica GT-S: 3s-ge to 3s-gte conversion (FWD)

Ok, so I have the chance to pick up a Gen 4 ('86) Celica GT-S for about $800. Here's the car:

That interior looks like it hasn't ever been touched. The issue is that it has 160,000 miles on it. So I plan on swapping the engine (this will be my Auto-X car by the way).

I have done some searching on how easily I can mate the 3s-gte with the stock s54 tranny. I don't want to have to swap to the e153 due to funds. So far the only thing I have fund anywhere that would be an issue would be the starter location:
http://celica.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb...=003104#000004

However I found on another site that I don't need to relocate it. So I'm not entirely sure which is right. And I'm wondering if you guys know. I want to know what I am getting into before I go off and buy and engine and ECU (I'll be using a alltrac ECU).

Thanks for the help,
-Mike

The 3SGTE isn't the best AutoX engine...

Anyways... it depends on where you get the e153 out of... cause it also came in a FWD set-up from Carmys and Solaras. If you get it out of the MR2... you'll need to do a few things to it. You can use the stock S54 but only with stockish boost conditions. The power/torque output of the 3SGTE will put that tranny into early retirement.

I don't plan on using a e153. And the MR2 had a s51.

I don't plan on doing any mods to this past the swap. I want to keep this car in G-Stock.

So the tranny is an exact match? I don't need to move the starter like some claim?

And I'm not worried about the engine for auto-x. Auto-X is about the driver, not the car. I just want a smaller car to run in G-Stock. Right now I run my Camry in STS. That's also why I don't mind keeping it FWD

The stock Tranny should bolt right up. The MR2 Turbos came with the e153... those are the ones that need modification and those are almost always the ones people refer to.

Yeah, because the original 3s-gte e153 was AWD. From what I have read you just need the hubs and a few other things. But that's no matter, because I don't plan on getting on.

Sweet! Thanks a lot man. I'm going to go through with this project as soon as I can shell out the cash

The E153 is not the AWD tranny. It's the MR2 turbo tranny and the 5 speed Camry/Solara V6 tranny. Those are the ideal trannies to swap in cause they're stronger than the S5 trannies...
