Question Fitting a thermostat ????

Hi Everyone.
I've recently got my lovely Celica 2.0 GTI 1990.
It needed a new rad cos it was blowing all the water out when driven hard.
That’s now fixed (thanks to this site. )
but I also need a thermostat, as there isn't one in there at the mo
I've had no problem getting the air locks out while there is no stat.
but when I put in the new stat (Original from Toyota)
I can't get any coolant in..!

it just belches out all the time.
And the top hose feels like there is nothing in there. !

I'm thinking there is an air lock behind the stat
but I've put the air hole thing at the top of the stat like you should

Do I need to drill a little hole in and remove the little metal thing.?

Any ideas or experience of this kind of thing, it's starting to drive me mad

Hope you can help and thanks for reading..

Cheers
Jamie

You need to idle the engine until it got hot enough to open the thermo to get coolant in.

you have to open the vent

There is an air bleed plug that must be removed when adding coolant. I don't have the manual with me but it is usually in the intake near the idle air control valve.. It looks a reqular pipe plug with a square end to put a wrench on. I like to fill the rad with this plug open and the front of the car on ramps. Just add coolant slowly until it comes out of the hole. If the car is not on ramps it will still fill up much better with the vent hole open but coolant will probably not come out. Whatever you don't drive it or run it until you know it is filled - you'll warp the head for sure.

Thanks Guys,
I'll have a look for that bleed screw.

And cheers Pinapple. I've read your old posts about the rad
when people think it's the head gasket gone...!

I've just bought this car cheap as the guy thought the head gasket was going, (but I wasn't to sure) and after a good look round this forum I found your posts, and it all made sence.
New rad and now it's fine ...just need to get the stat in now
But it's late and dark so I'll try tomorrow.

Any more ideas on this thread are still welcome

Thanks again

Jamie..

Keep turning the heater on and off also rev the engine a bit to move the coolant. Drive it around with resover fill up.

DId you just use the same rad cap from the old rad on the new one, cause if you did, there is your problem. Thats what I did when I repalced my rad, had to go back to the place I bought my rad and try a bunch of rad caps till I found one that built pressure.
