Question New Motor

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum thingie, but mabe I can make some friends and get some info too. OK here is my delema, I have a brand new 3SGE with the TVIS manifold on it, since it is new, I dont want to pull the head or do anything drastic to it just yet but I have heard alot of guys taking the TVIS plate out or taking the shafts and all out of the plate and getting a pretty good power boost, I will then gasket match the ports, any other non drastic HP ideas to this engine would be a great help

At stock form, TVIS helps so don't take it out until you port the head. Get the 3S-GE ECU so you get proper TVIS switch over or use a RPM switch to activate TVIS.

Thumbs up cool

The motor got pulled out of a gts in 87, it fell off the delivery truck and has been sitting at my buddies wrecking yard ever since on a pallet, all the stuff that is associated with the motor is there and wiring and all but the ecu and the flywheel, I have it at the shop and I am going to pop some yalve cover gaskets and t belt and rear main seals in it

I wouldn't port that head. The ports are awfully big in stock form. Removing TVIS may increase top-end but will decrease low-end response and torque.

You might wanna pull the head and have a look inside before you drop it in. Its new but still been sitting for 17 years.

checkup

2 very good points, I checked out the motor pretty well, I popped the exhaust manifold and opened the valves and took our telescope and looked into each plug hole with the lite comming in through the open valves, everything is shiny and nothing living in them, before that though I popped the valve coveres and lubed up the cams, shot wd40 down the plug holes and drained the spotless oil out and removed the origional toyota oil filter, and refilled it and with a very tiny oil filter. I then turned the motor over enough times with a ratchet to get oil up to the cams The other point is the TVIS, I dont have a car to put it in just yet but my arthritis in my knees and right shoulder is telling me to get an automatic So I guess the valves would get it off the line better but I have also heard that the little shims on top of the spring buckets like to relocate at hi RPM, I will most likely be putting this motor into a celica that had a 3SFE origionally and I might need some more tips from you guys to wrap this car up, I want to drive this car to work and about instead of my Camry, and have fun getting there

17 year old treasure!

Sounds like a real find to me. Hope you get it into a CelicaI would not remove the TVIS either. The slow speed torque is amazing for such a small engine. Makes it more fun for everyday driving. I would change the distributer O ring while the engine is out - they all leak eventually. If you are concerned about stuck rings I suggest using Red-X not WD-40. WD-40 doesn't contain oil and tends to wash the oil that is already there away. Red-X is sold at motorcycle shops. Too bad you need an automatic. This engine loves to rev and is a blast with the 5 speed. Have fun!

You guys aint gonna believe this, the Snap On guy came to the shop today, he saw my shiney 3sge and said I have a car that needs a crank kit for one of those, I said that motor is new, he said holy crap when I pulled the valve covers off, I said i need a car for this motor. He said screw it, Im never gonna get that car going, you want it? I about fell over, said oh yeah, he said the motor is out of it and the auto trans is at a trans shop being rebuilt, I gave him 4 bills and I went to see the car, the interior is blue velour, its perfect, the outside is lighter blue and looks really good but there is NOTHING under the hood but a steering rack, I need some pretty hi rez pics from anyone to kinda show me where and what way around all the little things go. Everything is in boxes in the trunk

The celica is getting painted this week, I have since been given another 88 camry, but this one is 5 speed, I might put the new motor in it and leave it NA and build up a turbo motor for the celica
