rust in the gas tank?

Hi All -

I just bought a 1990 Celica. I should be going to pick it up in a few weeks. Something is wrong with the fuel delivery. Based on the description of what the car was doing when it last ran, my best guesses are fuel pump or rust in the gas tank. I just wanted to get a feel of if either of these are known issues with Celicas of that generation - I know every car has quirk.

If I can find a fairly cheap one, I'll probably bring a pump with me just in case - I priced a new one at $270. However, if it's rust, are there any quick fixes that can get the car to make 1100 miles - to where I can drop the tank?

Thanks ...

unless the car has been sitting for quite some time, condensation shouldn't have formed and the tank wouldn't rust. What are the symptoms?

well ... this is just hearsay, and the source may not be the MOST reliable in terms of details.

Quick rundown ~
i bought the car from my sister. the car has been running fine since 2002. this past summer she was on her way from Flagstaff to New York and she said it just started to hesitate on the highway, progressively worse until it stopped. she called me and i told her my best guess was the filter. i told her to have it changed. she did that and then hit the highway again. it died again after about 10 minutes. she said it will start, but when she tried to drive it, it would just start hesitating. this happened in Illinois ... that's where she left the car. i want to go and get it in a few weeks when i get out of school.

thanks for the reply ... any help is appreciated.

Try ignition coil, ignitor, fuel pump, injector and other fuel or ignition related component.

changed the filter twice ... i guess i failed to mention that.
i also failed to mention that i suggested that she get the filter changed again after i did it for her because the gas looked like sh*t-water ... literally! she never did. anyway on the day the car died, when she called me from illinois and described what the car was doing, i told her to buy a filter and have it changed. she did.
from what i was told, when they towed it back after she set out the last time, they pulled the line again and the gas looked like sh*t-water ... in the space of about 10 minutes. i've never seen that before. that's why i was wondering about the condtion inside of the tank.

anyway, thanks for the replies. i appreciate them all.
