1988 Celica starter problem

1988 toyota celica gt, 4 cyl auto. i have an intermitent starter problem. occasinally when i start the car the starter sticks. it seems that the starter gear does not mesh up with the flywheel & will not turn it. turn the ignition off & try it again & usually it will turn over. i would appreciate any ideas about what is going on & how to rectify it. in some parts catalogs there is a reerence to Bosch Reman catalog to application notice # B-37 in regards to damage to the flywheel, any one have a clue what this is all about? if i amin need of a starter where would be a good place to pick up a denso starter. thanks! the car has only 55k on it.

I had the same symptoms in an old Volvo 340 and it was that the starter motor was on the way out. It went from periodic clicks, to lots of clicks (kept having to return key to I and retry in order to start it) and eventually it gave up the ghost completely. A new (well, recon actaully) unit cured it.

if its clicking its something else. if its grinding, ive heard its a defect with the starter gear not having the right angles on them. mine did it after the manual swap, and i regrounded the tranny, and its worked fine since. go figure right?

grinding starter

thanks for your replies! yes it is grinding but only occasionaly. it usually only does it once & then i hit it again & it will start ok. i suspect a chipped tooth on the fly wheel or maybe a worn clog on the starter gear. if no other ideas i will change out the starter with another denso & see what happens. i need to find out what the application notice # B-37 refers to in the Bosch Reman catalog. from what i gather it has to do with some of the starters for this vehicle. other than that this is a great car & fun to tool around in.

there is a difference with the manual and auto starters. plugs are different, also the auto starter is a high torque piece.

I had the exact problem in my 88' gt convertible... Get yourself a toyota brand starter, that will fix your problem. the reason why I stress toyota parts on this application is b/c I went through 4 bosch starters and they all failed within about a week. Give that a try.
