Unhappy I got problems people

okay hears the deal i got a new engine from some backyard geeche mechanic recently and its all f***ed up. I planned just to get that until i get the 4agze but! now that i got my car back it only shifts into 4th gear(automatic) when the thermostat is registering any kind of temp. which it only does sparatically in cold whether and constantly in warm weather. i took it to the transmission shop and the dude said i must have internal problems but how can that be when it shifts fine while the engine is getting temp info.
also the backyard mechanic left my vaccum hoses off like 3 of them and i dont even see the bsav(for evap) sensor. until i get my hoses back in line theres still a problem of oil leaking either from the top cover gaskets (forgot the name timing cover i thinks, by the spark plugs) or the sleves where the spark plugs sit everything else i did my self so its A okay

Is my tranny shot, is it the leaks, is it the vaccum hoses, because i was just about to buy the 4agze to swap but i cant if the trannies bad because that would mean i would have to swap to a manual which would kick ass but its not like i know how so is my tranny good or not cus a new engine would fix all the other problems

4th gear is OD. There is a temp switch to turn it OFF when coolant is not hot enough. Check and make sure you got a thermostat in coolant neck or just buy a new one and replace it. Check to see if rad fan is working, not all the time, only when engine is hot. Worse case, find the OD temp switch and disconnect it. Also check and make sure you got enough ground wire on engine block and tranny. A miss ground will cause wrong sensor reading.
BTW my OD temp switch is broken too I unplug it and turn OD off when cold to warm the engine up and turn it back on when engine is hot.

Wait looks like the 4A doesn't have an OD temp switch.

it wont go into od until it gets about half way warmed up, lots of cars are programmed this way to aid engine warm up and cut emissions, sounds like your thermostat is stuck open or gone, put one in it and get it warmed up and it should be ok, running cold like that isnt good for the motor eather
