abs check, light on

My abs light came on last night. I read that you can run a check and match it to a code in the factory manual. One problem is I don't have the tool they recommend so is there a way around buying this tool. The manual is a little vague so i may buy a Haynes or one of the other aftermarket books that explains it all better. Any one of these books better than the others?
Any other thoughts on this subject would be helpful too.
The Brakes seem fine although I have not pulled the wheels yet to check the pads etc. This weekend hopefully. Also in a previous post I had a problem of the car pulling to the right and I thought i would mention it if that may be related.

Used the search and then a paperclip but today the light was not on when I started the car so it read "alls well". At least the next time it comes on I'll have the paper clip with me and will be able to get a reading.
