Engine Noise 89 Celica

Driving to work this morning my 89 Celica st started this rattleing - clicking noise that seems to occur as RPM's rise. AT idle it still makes noise but not all the time. It turned out to be low on oil but would that cause all that noise? It was not as loud as a rod knocking but it was fairly loud. It would still pull but had noticable lost some power, if thi sis a cam problem this could be due to valves not opening completely. Is it lifters or a cam promblem? How much is this going to cost me? Will I make it home or will it blow up first? I really need to get it home so I can fix it if possible. I am not afraid to work on it, but I need to know what I am looking for, I am usually used to working on 60's american muscle cars but I have worked on this one a few times and if it can be fixed I will do it. The Oil light never came on but the guage was moving around, not holding steady like it usually does. This has car has been good to me I would hate for it to blow. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

yep, it would cause noises, but its kinda hard to tell you what happened or what the cost is from here
