I have a 1988 celica convertible. This car is lightly modified, and now I am doing all the weight reductions necessary to make this car surprisingly quick. Theres only one problem I am facing... I cant remove the rear seat backs, the seat bottom was easy, I'm trying but I cannot remove the seatbacks from the metal "u shaped hooks" holding them in, I do not know what to do. I may just cut them off with a air grinder but that would not let me put them back in, hence my conflict. After I get this weight reduction done I'll be sure to let everyone know how little it weighs. (and yes this is a summer car, there is no top) hehehe...
REMOVAL OF REAR SEAT CUSHION AND BACK
1. LOWER CONVERTIBLE TOP
2. REMOVE REAR SEAT CUSHION
Lift up on front end of seat to remove.
3. REMOVE REAR SEATBACK
(a) Unlatch and fold the rear seatback down.
(b) Detach the trunk carpet from the seatback carpet.
(c) Using a clip remover, remove the three clips retaining
the seatback carpet to the floor.
(d) Remove the two bolts from the seatback side hinge and
remove the rear seatback.
I think im gonna just leave the roof off... oh yeah by the way took my celi to the junkyard... weighs 2246 lbs now Keep in mind ive removed more than you should ever remove in this car. Heres a partial list of things removed... convertible top, along with all systems to lift and lower it. all carpeting from back seats to trunk, interior sound proofing, cd player, the entire a/c system, and i mean all of it. spare tire makes apprearances once in awhile, if im driving it for a long time. washer fluid bottle, has lightweight rims... there is a few more things I cannot remember right now. But this car is light, I hope to get it to around 2,000 lb... this is only a project car, I dont think I could tolerate this car with no ammenites everyday, lol.
By the way the entire emmisions system has been removed too. lol
Wow.. or you coulda just kept the car looking good and swapped a JDM 3SGTE into it and had it pretty fast with that.. did some turbo mods and been running 300HP.. not sacrificing your every ammenity and making the car look like shit to boot... but to each his own
Oh and I doubt having the washer fluid is gonna kill your cars performance .. I mean it isn't that heavy lol.
Oh and since you have no roof now.. or like anything at all, with all this "speed" if you should ever get into an accident or flip it or anything your gonna be one hurting boy that's for sure.
As far as looking good, I've went ahead and purchased loose fiberglass & plastic to make a covering where the top and backseats were, I will reinforce it with steel, so the weight will go back up some, however as we all know the back seats in most celicas are worthless, why not leave it a 2 seater. I also purchased some bulk leather and will go ahead an re-sew the seats and upholstery. The cd player and what not will be going back in come summer. New carpet is on the way as well. I apologize if it sounds like I just want the car just fast, its not that, and I'm not 16 anymore, lol. However, I have noticed by reducing the weight it makes it more enjoyable to drive. This is just another case of making a car "yours", total customization.
I guess, but the issue I always had with my ae92 coupe corolla was the fact that the front had plenty of weight.. but the rear had no.. so the rear would always break loose on wet roads and end up wrapping around the front.. so the weight reduction isn't always the BEST thing for handling. However since I had the eibach springs on with the new struts I don't recall having any issues.. but oh well.. I love my celica GTS hatchback now Still have a strong love for the ae92... can't deny that.
Still though instead of reducing weight I'm just gonna drop a 2nd gen JDM 3SGTE in.. that'll take care of the speed plenty well.
thier are 2 bolts that hold the seats to the U shaperd braket its a pain to get but take the bolts out and yank on the seat. he hit me up with your weight reduction plans...These are some of the weight reductions that i did that had the most performance improvements 1 remove the cruise control accuator under the hood and reconnect the throttle cable back to the t/body,remove all a/c componets(cond.,pump, lines,) that alone is 64 lbs of weight.!!!!!and u must reroute your batterry to the trunk (passanger side, weight for balance)40 -60 for the kit since u like Napa they could find u one....

I HAVE LOOKED AROUND AND THE CHEAPEST ONE IVE SEEN ARE ON EBAY LIKE 249.00 W/OUT THE LITTLE PLASTIC WINDOW IN THE BACK, HAVE YOU FOUND AWAY TO REDUCE THE FOGGY CRAP THAT BUILDS UP????
GOOD JOB MAN I GOT MINE DOWN TO 2402 LBS, I dont remeber where i seen this but a older nissan or toyota had bored holes into the sides if thier doors, bye the door hinges and the latch , they said it has reduced drag on tthe veichile plus the weight of the metal the took oot..and if you want to get 2000 lbs man you could cut the inner panel under where the old air box was at, maybe 5-6 lbs off the front end shouldnt effect anything...have you removed your dash yet,1 more question in what condition is your weatherstrip arund your f windshield in????
