depends on what your goal is... also depends on how ambitious you are. Tell me/us what you had in mind exactly...

I'd think a V6 and 5speed from a tacoma would be a good start....

i was thinking of an engine swap with one of these 4A-GZE, 18R-GEU, 3T-GTE, 1G-GTE, 7M-GTE, 2JZ-GTE, 3S-GTE, 1UZ-FE. But dont know which one would just bolt right in.

no they are 4 cylinders. The 20R is a 2.2L and the 22R is a 2.4L. They are basically the same motor except different displacment. The 20R however does have a lot better flow in the head with circle intake ports compared to square intake ports on a 22R and the combustion chamber is smaller on the 20R which means higher comp. The 22R changed the deck heigth in 95 to make it harder to put a 20R head on it.

As for what is a direct bolt in the 18RG is a direct bolt in since it is an R block. A 7mge or 7mgte is a direct bolt in using the 5mge motor mounts but that still requires some modfication because the engine is a lot longer so you need to find a radiator to fit. you should check out www.classic-celica.com there are a lot of people that know more about swaps. I have a 2nd gen celica(81) but I am not a fan of swaps and am currently building a hybrid(20R head with a 22R block) and putting sidedrafts carbs on it.

Yes the 7mgte is a turbo. There is also a non turbo version the 7mge. The 7mgte came in a 88-93 Supra. The 7mge came in the 86.5-93 supra and last generation of the cressida. I have heard that if you drop in a stock 7mge into a 2nd gen you will run 13's in the 1/4 but I havne't seen any proof of that yet.

Of course it would I am just telling you the information that I have. The turbo will be a lot harder to put in the car. This is a very hard swap though because you have to make room for everything, cut a hole for a new shifter location a new driveshaft, a different rear end and all the little detail things. IF you want to do a swap like that then be prepared to pay a crap load for parts you will need and it will take a ton of custom work. If you are wanting something that is simple and is a bolt in then try to find an 18RG. It is a 2.0L DOHC that came stock with sidedraft carbs. They were not available in any car in america though but a lot were in cars overseas. If you search hard enough you can find one. Or another option is to just build your 20R or build a 20R/22R hybrid. IF you want to build it up a good place to go for parts is www.lcengineering.com they are a company that deals with only 20r, 22R, 2rz and 3rz. They are kind of expensive but are really worth it they make very good parts.

Well with any swap you do no matter what there are going to be some mods you need to make it work right but with the 18RG it is a direct bolt into the stock motor mounts and the tranny and the mods you have to do are minor things like exhaust and throttle linkages and what not.

What type of stats could a good build produce using about $1000 on a 20r? I personally know jack on carb engines.
