FredK.............
Done Deal. It indeed was the timing belt. It was missing about 12 consecutive teeth. It was a little cramped (The transverse engine concept is just awful), but no knuckles were harmed in the repair. Also put on a new Valve Cover Gasket, as there was a noticeable leak. Man, I put everything back together and it started up, only to run a little sluggish. Found out through the Chilton's manual that one has to short out 2 of the connections on the Diagnostic panel in order to correctly time the ignition. Made the adjusments, runs like a top. In the process, I was able to tighten the power steering belt, which has made a huge difference when I take turns at low RPM's.
Thanks a ton for the diagnostic. Before I got into it, I tried the "take off the dist cap" thing, but it actualy turned when I cranked it......found out it was the belt when I took off the top cover and saw serious stress on the top side.
Fred K, you are the man, no doubt about it. Thanks a ton from a proud DRIVER of a 1991 Toyota Celica.
