I have a 1991 Toyota Celica GT (2.2) that will not start. I was running the car for about 10 minutes (I live in Minnesota, it was about -10 that morning), and all of the sudden it shut off. It cranks, but will not "turn over" or "fire". Haven't looked at anything yet, however I know it's most likely not A) The Battery, or B) The Starter. Any guesses for where to start. Like I said, it's freaking cold here, so I want to know what I'm getting into if I'm going to be in a garage that's about 5 degrees below zero. Rough Times.
easier way of checkin that is just to remove a spark plug.. put the wire-boot back on the plug and let the spark plug rest on your valve cover.. see if you have spark.
It's kinda a pain for me to get into and remove the cap.. don't know if it's the same you or not.. probably though.
Thanks much. I will check everything out this evening and let you know what I find out. A buddy of mine says that the wires and distributor cap are a one-piece thing, and they run expensive. Not sure I believe him. I am crossing my fingers hoping for it to be something cheap, but I know better.
Not sure what the deal is now.....just heard from my friend who is having a diagnostic of the Celica done now at a dealership......says good spark, good fuel......may be timing belt. Am I going to be into this thing for 8 hours to replace the timing belt?? Also he said there may have been "fuel in the oil". I'm pretty sure that's not great. I need a band-aid for this car to get me through the winter. I have had the car for 1 month, already having issues. I guess that's what you get when you buy 1500 dollar cars.
So, here's where we are at (if anyone still cares). The fuel was in the oil due to flooding the vehicle, and I still have no definative word on what the culprit may be. I'm pretty sure timing belt/bearing/what have you..........I will continue to post results of inspections, etc. If it is indeed the timing belt, is it worth it to "man up" and get into it myself (I do have a working knowledge of vehicles, I can understand that my posts may suggest otherwise), or do I drop the 400 bucks to get it done?? Is it worth saving the knuckles and time, or am I being a crybaby about it. If someone out there knows what is entailed in replacing a timing belt, let me know.
Seriously, I appreciate any and all advice you guys can give me. I tell you what, the best piece of advice I get receives a prize!! I have 2 TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Head Rest Pads that came with the car. They're not exactly my style, so I would gladly ship them to the person who gets this thing right!!!!
the oil thing is an easy fix, i dont think it that bad off, but change it anyways, the timing belt is not a big deal, its a little work and you cant hurt the motor if you get it on wrong anyways, I have 2 to do tomorrow and if you want to go for it and dont have an immediate deadline to get it done I can walk ya through it, just be sure you have a long handled half inch drive ratchet or breaker bar and a socket for it to fit the crank pulley, thats going to be your biggest challenge, getting it loose and off, but after that its a downhill slide, ya got aim?
No AIM (sorry), however I do have the breaker bar, sockets that would fit just about anything, etc. FYI: My friend at the dealership is billing me 100 bucks to tell me "Well, uh, we can't find out what's wrong with it for sure, uh........". Bad times. I think I'll just tow it to the garage and have at it this weekend. I'll have a couple sets of eyes (and a Haynes manual) to guide me. If I run into anything I can't comprehend or resolve on my own, I'll let you know. Of course, the other option is donating the bad boy and getting another vehicle. It's just not what I had in mind for a car that I have owned for about a month. I will keep you posted as to the progress of the situation, and if it's the timing belt, I will seriously ship you the TRD head rest pads if you want them. You seem to be the only one in the Celica forum that actually attempts to help.
1st thing you have to do is see if the distributor turns when you crank the motor over, give your buddy the bill and get it over with and get it home where its cheap to fix, the belt itself will be about 15 bucks
So, the Celica has been pulled to the parent's garage (it's heated, mine is not). If it indeed turns out to be the t belt, is it worth purchasing the kit with new tensioners?? Also, are there any strange bits I will need (Larger Torx, etc.) that I will need once I rip into this bad boy?? I am most likely going to begin it on Saturday (once the booze wears off), and I'm hoping I can drive it to work on Monday. I'm guessing if "book" is 3 hours, it should take me about 8. Any tricks of the trade or other pieces of advice that I should be made aware of before I bust my knuckles??
if it is the belt, ill walk ya through it, your not gonna bust anything, get a complete quarter drive socket set, a 12 mm 14 mm 10mm 3/8 sockets with lots of extensions, 2 jack stands and a floor jack, a 14mm 12mm 10mm wrench at least and a 19mm and 21mm half drive socket, with a 1 foot extension and a big and good quality half drive ratchet, and a small piece of a 2x4
