shot synchro's

Wonderin what tranny I would have in my '90 GT-S hatchback 5sfe 5spd.. My synchro's are shot.. 2nd gear grinds to hell when I go to shift If I run 1st gear to high (like racing or just tryin to get some speed out from a stop.. or downshifting in anything like above 20mph into 2nd gear)

I can also feel it in 3rd gear when I downshift.. not nearly as bad at all.. but it's goin..

So just wondering what the tranny code is for this car and if it would be hard to replace the synchro's.. what the parts would cost.. etc.

Thanks!

Its an S series tranny, the syncros themselves aren't pricey, its the time/labour that will get expensive. S series tranny's are cheap, they came in a lot of cars including 4th/5th/6th gen GT/GTS', 5SFE and 3SFE Camry's, NA MR2's, etc, you could get ahold of and rebuild it yourself. FYI, the 4th gen GTS and pretty much all import 3SGE Celicas had a super high final drive, this would ideal for performance, but would kill your gas mileage while cruising.

btw, if a rebuild isn't in the budget right now, grab some Redline MTL gear oil or Penzoil full synthetic gear oil, it'll help cover up the problem a bit.
