Angry NEED HELP! Check engine on 2000 GT + Rattles!

My Girlfriend owns a 2000 celica GT with about 100k on it. Its fairly well maintained and has been running great until recently. Its seems the check engine light has been coming on and off (stays on for a day then goes away not flashing) and finally in the last little while its been solid. I had Yoshio at JA look at it and cleared the codes. He mentioned it is either the MAF or a sensor where the gas cap/tank is. She couldnt afford to replace it at the time and I thought this should not cause any damage.

Anyways over the summer she drove the car and I noticed that when accelerating from a low speed there would be a rattle coming from the front end. At first I thought it was exhuast but after getting Yoshio to check it out, there was none. I also gave it a tune up with origina Denso plugs and belt and oil change. At the same time I had a compression test and had him scope the egnine. It was fine, something like 150/152 compressio nacross the board. The thing is its still happening and has begun using more oil than it should (almost a quart throughout in the 4500/5000km before oil change). I also noticed the exhaust pipe has alot of soot on it(probably thr Maf).

Does anyone know what the issue and fix is? Could the MAF sensor be causing this? How is the best way to replace the MAF (step by step please). Any info would be great....

what type of oil and fuel do you use? sometimes when i fill up on regular it idles hard. little things like an air filter will solve problems, if it was well maintained then id go to toyota and let them do a print out on diagnostics...never know what might come up.

...i hate going to toyota, but sometimes paying 80 bucks and knowning what to fix is better then spending over 100 changing things around thinking it will fix it.
