First off, sup everyone appreciate you guys helping out a n00b. My question is, I am trying to do a swap into my 85 celica GT. I heard they made a turbo version of the 22re-t and was wondering if that would drop right in? If not do you guys know of which motors would drop right into the car? Any and all suggestions would be extremely helpful.
I`ve heard of it being done without too much trouble, the 22re-t comes from the 4runner. I`m not sure how competent the guy who did this conversion was, he may have been an ace mechanic for all I know, but at least you know its possible. There will be alot of other upgrades needed like ECU, wiring loom, fuel pump, uprated gearbox to cope with the extra power and torque etc but it sounds like an interesting project. Why not save yourself the trouble and buy a GT4?
Thanks guys appreciate the info! Insanity, i wish i could just buy a GT4 but they are hard to find around here and also i love my celica waaaaay too much. It was my first ride and never let it go. Ive owned a Turbo charged CRX and a 99 accord coupe V6 that was a show whore. Talkin kandy paint 19 inch lowenharts and air ride. In the end i sold the others and kept the celica, cus i love it waaaay to much for some odd reason. I would also love to build a bad ass old skooler, so any and all suggetions are welcomed.
what do you mean by "a bad ass old schooler" are we talkin "muscle cars" here or an old school Celica. for shear fun you cant beat the RWD Celica Supra, rare as rocking horse sh*t but mental cars to drive and alot of potential.

well my 85 celica is considered an "old school" car in the import scene, so I'd like to mod her to where it would be reliable yet quick. I dont wanna do anything off the wall, just something that would make people go "wow, thats a nice old car". I guess i spoiled myself with the accord, but also id like to kick a lil ass with a street worthy motor. Like I said if I have to get another car, or a motor swap wouldnt be worth it, then I'd rather just leave the celica alone.
When a cars getting to that age, I`m not sure how much you can do that is cost effective, theres the usual route of air filter, exhaust etc etc, one mod that is often overlooked is a set of high lift cams, not that expensive compared to other mods like strapping on a turbo, but it does give a nice (but small) power increase and a excellent lumpy engine tickover.
What I like with older cars is when you clean it up big time, especially the engine/engine bay. You cant beat opening a hood to see a nice chrome topped (clean) engine.

I am in Dallas and I know that the emmission laws will put you out of business here in Texas.
An engine swap might put you off the street. Unless you are willing to have a stand by engine for inspection time.
The 18RG would be your best bet. Its an R family engine and can kick some horse power out. Have to use 20r and 18r engine mounts in a combo..dont remember the combo.
Had a 76 Celica that was doin 220 at the crank....give or take 10 horses.
I did spend some bucks on it, but I was killin 5.0's and many other cars.
Got a P51 tranny from japan, and it was great.
Had to retire the car when the emission laws changed....she was always there for me, but had to let her go...i miss her.
