Hi guys, I wonder if your knowledge might be able to help me!
A work colleague is selling his 1990 5th generation Japanese imported Celica ZR. I can't find any details on the ZR on the web! I have looked up the engine code and it's a 3rd generation S series engine with fuel efficient head (3S-FE) - could be good for town driving where I live
I've called what seems like hundreds of insurance companies and found only 2 that can even offer the ZR insurance. Hardly anyone has heard of the ZR - this worries me. Adrian Flux are the cheapest at £485 for TPF&F. DIG was way expensive. Elephant would have been very reasonable at £350 for TPF&F. They have the ZR (Import) listed but say it was only produced from 1994 and so the 1990 doesn't count
If you guys could offer any advice I would be most grateful. Thanks.
I'm having real problems with the insurance. Although it's badged on the back as a Z-R the model number is ST182 so I was wondering if I can get away ith insuring it as something else seeing as Z-R seems to really only relate to the trim. Any one got any advice?
Thanks Insanity-74... I was thinking myself it was labelled as a GTI or GT-R here, just wondering if I'll get away with telling the insurance company that... There's £300 difference between GTI/GT-R and the Z-R!
Thanks lcarocha,
The spec sheet didn't really help me out :-(
It's weird only 2 insurance companies recognise the Z-R (maybe they don't, just cover it under an umbrella insurance type?)
What I find weird is that the insurers www.elephant.co.uk have a Z-R (import) on their list of Celicas but insist that they were only manufactured from 1994 onwards! This one was defintely manufactured in 1990!
Been doing some research on the internet on this one
1. the ST182 comes with either the 3S-FE or 3S-GE engine, (ST183 was the 4WS version)
2. As yours has the 3s-fe engine, st182 Celicas never made it into the UK with the 3s-fe engine only the 3s-ge so I`m stuck as to what you can call it. the quotes you got dont sound too bad, try "Admiral", they are pretty cheap, insured me fully comp for £800 on a GT4 with no no-claims.

Thanks! I've been digging around Google for a few days now and I work with computers but haven't managed to find out that much concrete detail, but you've managed to find some good stuff!
I was just looking at the specs sheet and it agrees with you about the ST183 being 4WS. I didn't know S3-FE engines never made it into the UK, thanks for that!
I've got the numbers off the plate under the bonnet...
Model: E-ST18-BL-M6A
Engine: 3S-FE
Frame: ST182-xxxxxxx (although the handwriting looks like 3T182-xxxxxxx or 37182-xxxxxxx!)
I've tried Admiral but because they don't list the Z-R they can't do anything for me. I've even got 6 years no claims ;-) I've tried so many companies but only two list the Z-R and they are way more expensive than a GT(-R) import with a major insurance company. :-(
If too much trouble just rebadge the damn thing, from the outside no one will tell if it has a 3S-FE or 3S-GE in it, besides, I think insurance companys do really care if you have a F head or a G one.

If you have trouble with getting insurance u shud try www.quotezone.co.uk my hubby used it, u fill in your details and it gets you loads of quotes form different places
there are no 1990 ZRs in australia. 5th gens only came here as SX or GT4, 6th and 7th gens are available as SX and ZR.
its possible that your car just has the wrong badge on the back
