Newbie w/94 celica questions

Hi, just bought a '94 5-spd. 130K miles 1.8L engine. ( I assume this is a non-GT car)

#1 - How do I pull codes on this car?

#2 - At idle if I floor it quickly the engine will bog down and stumble and die. If you gradually give it gas, it will rev up just fine. Sometimes it takes a long time to start (lotta cranking), sometimes it cranks up after about 3-4 revolutions of the starter. It seems like the engine is not getting fuel. Bad Fuel filter perhaps? Other ideas?

#3 - Tapping from what sounds like under the valve covers. Tapping gets faster as rpms increase. I knew this when I bought it, got it cheap. No loss of power, no check engine light.

#4 - Got a major power steering leak, needs about 1/2 qt every 3 days. Havn't had time to look at it in the daytime, any usual places the power steering system springs a leak?

This is my first foreign car ever. It is my wife's daily driver. We've only put 50 miles on it so far.

TIA everybody.

#2 - could be bad spark also. Check that.
#3 - valve sticking, do a flush to clean everything up.

Also do a engine vac or similar to clean the whole intake and fuel syatem. Some fuel injection cleaner won't hurt.

By "flush" do you mean pour motor oil in the engine and let it run out the drain hole, with the engine off of course?

Not motor oil but engine flush fluid you can buy. Follow instruction on the bottle.

#2 could be either as you mentioned a fuel block somwhere, it could also be overfueling which Celicas can be prone to, it could also be a worn fuel pump, lazy injector, timing problems. Is it fuel injected or Carb? If it carb it could be a blocked fuel jet.

Help with probs

hey i've got a 1994 celica gt which has the 2.2L in it. the st (your model) has a few minor differences like the taillights and rear end but other than the engine and that, its about the same car as the gt. On you power steering leak, check both the return and send power steering fluid lines. thats where mine leaked when i bought it. try checking your spark plugs, ignition coils, spark plug wires, etc to see if you can find the problem with your car bogging down. also like a few other ppl said, the celica is prone to over fueling which actually loses power and in the severity of your case can kill the engine. also check your fuel lines, pump injectors and filter, try buying some fuel injector/fuel system treatment and cleaner, i did this to mine and it not only ran better, it was a little smoother acceleration. hope this helps!
