Should I Get a Celica?

I am a Camry owner and I am considering getting a 2nd fun car to drive around primarily winding roads, I'm considering a 93+ Celica standard transmission that may accept a hotter, Japanese motor. What's this car handle like at its limits? Understeer/oversteer balanced? Is it predictable, or does the back end come loose and do a 180? How much do these go for?

yes, buy a celica.

come on, really, in this forum, what response did you expect. I just bought my '92 GT for 2k. it looks perfect inside and out, and came with pirellis.

I expect affirmatives, I'll judge them in order of enthusiasm!!

But really I need me a fun little car and I'm mulling 5.0s and IROCs, but I would rather have something that handles better and predictable - so I got to ask...

My GTS will either take the corner or slide sideway with all four. Not tail happy. It maybe too late when you realize its going sideway.

I've got a 91 GT with new springs, Bilstein struts, and the 93 wheels which can hold 205/55/15s. These things did wonders for the way the car handles but still the steering is somehow sloppy IMHO. I guess the power steering assists too much at speeds under 30 mph.

These cars are NOT tail happy at all. I've never lost traction in the back in any weather condition.

I'm looking into a 94-99 that will accept a turbo motor (but fwd only). It would have to have a boost controller that I can increase the boost and even decrease it when I feel like I shouldn't have too much power. I'm gonna be driving this on the edges of cliffs so If the car does a 180 it might go non-planer which would be all bad. According to the consumer reports magazine, this model is very forgiving around turns compared to the mr2 which can be abrupt when it loses traction. I had a very bad experience with a honda accord many years ago that did a 180 on me, no one hurt, nothing damage just scared the crap outa me and I never pushed that car again.

$2k? damn my country charges too much for freaking cars!!!

And I say buy either a Celica or Supra...Celica are well priced alot of the time compared to Supra though, it seems supra owners mark the price up alot.

the first time I ever seen a supra (and thought anything about it) it was in the dealership and they wanted 53k for it. nice car but especially back then: 50k for a toyota? come on... if I put 50k on a house then it would be worth have appreciated enough for me to buy a marcialego now. I mean if you can afford one, fine but wow just too much.

the celica appeals to me because i think thet the 94-99 ones look cool, they aren't that expensive. appropriate for twisties, and the front wheel drive may be less likely to oversteer.

MR2s these days are all at price levels where high school kids can afford them. This is part of the problem of them getting a bad rep. for the rear coming loose in cornering. Granted the car is heavy in the rear where the drive wheels are but that said it is not inherently a dangerous car. Inexperienced drivers are the problem with MR2s.

Usually a FWD car will have the tires scream and then give you a few more fractions of a g-force before it spins out. MR2 will handle like it is glued to the road and can be pushed hard to the limit but once you get past it the car will spin w/o warning.

up to about the 95 model supra you wont pay more then $30K (the 89 supra with 7M-GTE sell for about $6K - $10k in really good condition)...but I see it as worth it because those things are running lazy at 600rwhp+. But for a weekend cruiser and a very sweet looking turbo charged ride the Celica is a very good buy. I've driven quite a few of them, but I havnt had any probs with oversteer in rear wheel drive, in fact I find you have more control. Personal preference.

In short the FWD Celica I've driven have great steering, and a good amount of boost in turbo models...

I'll typically be driving around the local mountain roads which usually are on the edges of hills/mtns where one side would be blasted rock and the other a ravine or cliff. I don't think that I would live to complain about a sudden fishtail under certain circumstances. I seen some kids driving around a newer porsche around this college loop-thing that looked like a skidpad test, they were going real fast until it fishtailed and the front fender smashed into the curb. A bunch of dudes jumped out to inspect the damage, I'm sure some guy's dad was pissed. Naw, I've read that the mr2 is a really good handling car but tricky at it's limits - but I would rather have a car that didn't have any surprises.

Currently thinking about a gen VI and maybe putting a s/c on it because the 3sgte might not be ca-legal.

I guess they are not too common, I've been looking around to see if I could see one around, but I could see no gen 7s, or 6s, one gen 5 didn't look at the older ones. I did see a ferarri, countless benzes, bmws, porsche boxters, a delorean, but no gen 6s!!!

What can be done about the motor? If I get one I'ma be pissed with this 5sfe, I've got a camry so I'm familiar with its limitations (power). And I'm in California, so it must be CA legal whatever gets put in there, if the 3sgte imported from Japan won't work, what about an Audi engine or something?

A 3S-GTE from 4,5 and 6 gen GT4/AllTrac will work. Turbo the 5S or make a 5S-GTE from 3S-GTE head.

Just as important is it being california legal, If I didn't have to worry about the most stringent emisions in the whole wide world I guess that would work. Not only does it not have to be clean it also gots to be certified.
