4a or 7a???

I have recently decided to sell my 91 gts. It has taken great pains to decided, plus the fact multiple people have come up to me asking how much, when it's not even for sale. Also, with what I've read, the auto to manual conversion is not going to be worth to the money required, for a 5sfe motor.

So, I've been eye-balling some other celica's, I can't get any alltracs, but their is the option of 4afe and a 7afe. both are manuals and below $1000. decent body, around 140k miles, both will need new cv joints.

Which one will have a greater mod ability without custom parts?

Neither really. You could convert the 4AF into a pseudo-4AG but that wouldn't be worth it while you could technically mod the 7AF into a 7AG using the 4AG head wich will give you the available head/ecu mods of the 4AG. Though you really won't be able to rev past 7000 unless you mod or replace the crank. Since the car is using A series engines you could always swap in one of the many 4AG varients (bluetop (TVIS), redtop (high comp, no TVIS), 4AGZ (supercharged, most torque out of the box), or the infamous 20v 4AG Silver & Blacktops).

Just to restate myself, rebuilding the head and crank is no issue, I was refering to customizing Like, the 5sgte would require. Swapping heads, springs, valves, pistons, rods and such, take time a money, but I have plenty of time and some money, plus all the free labor I want.

Well everything for both those engines would be custom since no one makes any mods for those engines. If you have the money for custom everything then get the one with the 5S-FE. That one is worth building up. Though I still recomend if you have the money for building up an engine from scratch (the only thing good out of those engines are the blocks) I'd recomend swapping another engine that has a broader range of available modifications.

if it was me buying a celica set up for an a series motor, i would find a nice 4age drivetrain, then buy the one with the best body-interior

Yes, because if you rev to 7k RPM in a 7AGE, BOOM!!!

Best engine for power out of the box: 4AGZE (stock supercharged)
Best engine for the most power: 4AGE Silvertop (low comp rebuild and turbocharged)

Heheh... for those who are quoting toysport on the 7A crank breaking... LOL! That's just pure ignorance... Don't quote toysport because they are very biased towards custom engine builds. They only wanna sell product... not supply technical info. FYI, the euro versions of the 7AFE has fuel cut set at 7000 rpms. FYI... many people have built 7AGEs and rev them to 7500 rpms constantly in race situations. FYI... the weakest spot in the 7A bottom-end is the RODS not the crank! 7AGE builds have proven quite successful both n/a and forced induction.

Back to the original question now... the 7AFE and 4AFE are essentially the same engine... only the 7A is stroked and was slightly updated with a better intake manifold and slightly different head/ports. Presumably these are the correct engines for the correct model Celicas... just choose the one you like better (as in the car). The 6th gen is slightly lighter than the 5th gen but both are essentially the same. As far as mods go, there are the basic bolt-ons available that will work for either engine and then there are swap options. It's up to you and your wallet on how far you wanna go. HEad swaps will all you to basically use any and all 4AG modifications... and those are plentiful.
