It was just the intake valves that were hitting. Which is odd because the cam specs were 272 .430" on the intake and 282 .444" on the exhaust side so you would think that the exhaust would be hitting before the intake but I guess the size of valves were the determinant of the valves hitting.

ahhh...the carnage. Worst engine I ever roasted wasn't a toyota...it was a Yamaha warrior...the connecting rod broke loose and the piton hit the crankshaft so hard it actually cracked the piton almost all the way through..... entire new engine...FUCK.

Don't be scared about building a hybrid just make sure you clay check the piston to valve clearance and make sure you don't run to big of a cam and to make sure get your pistons cut with valve reliefs in them. As for EFI on a hybrid it can be done but you have to get the 20R head ported to match the intake manifold of the 22RE.

No I have thought it over and I am planning on just building this car for SCCA Club racing in E production class. I was going to find a 1st gen celica for it but I think I will just go with this 2nd gen. With the production class I can make it still street legal if I build it right too but we will see on that.

I'm thinking the timing was off a bit, maybe on the right gears, but off still. There are variable is what year head/block you mated, and then the shaving. These affect the timing as the cam is now closer to the crank. I put mine together one time(of the 10 or more times) with the timing chain off by a single tooth. I was tired from a long cold weekend and didn't double check behind myself. Bumped the key and heard a ring sound for about 4 rings, then 0 compression. Broke all 4 intake rockers, bent all 4 intake valves and created another 8 hours worth of work.
For your next R series hybrid I suggest you look into FI heads. While most have the same combustion chamber as a 22R there were a few with a really small chamber. Big valves, bigger than a 20r anyway. Much cheaper to setup. You do know there was a 22RTE also right?

Actually the timing was not off. The problem was many things. They were Pistons with no valve reliefs in them, 20R head with small combustion chambers and head milled more then I was told, too big of a cam. With all of those that is why the valves here hitting and why what happened happened. I had an early 22R block and a 78 20R head so if I didn't have the head milled at all I should have been able to run the cam I have and not have valve reliefs. If my math was right and the machine shop had milled the head the right amount I still shold have been safe but the head was milled more and I didn't know that until after it happened. I should have been smart and clay checked it but I was too confident with my math. As for my next motor it isn't going to be a hybrid. I have decided to build this car for SCCA Club Racing in the E-production class which means I have to keep the 22R head and can only do certain things according to the rules. I do know about the 22RTE and all the info on all the 20R and 22R's that were availble.
