Well I ended up blowing up my motor. I got the head off today and to say the least I basically have just aquired a lot of scrap metal. The number 4 cylinder let loose first it looks like. The head of the intake valve is completely off of the head and there is just chunks of metal everywhere and a pretty big hole in the piston. It looks like all of the intake valves were hitting the piston I guess I just couldn't hear it because of the open header and sidedrafts on there. That is probably why it got as bad as it did. Here are pictures of it http://www.classic-celica.com/module...view_album.php
I think I should win some award for having the most messed up piston for the year. I am not proud of it but I think with that much damage something should be won. I am thinking now since I have to replace the whole motor I am just going to swap something else in there. I haven't made up my mind on what yet but I will let everyone know.
hummm. i wish i had a pic of my first 5sfe that i blew... that was something else. missing piston and hole throught the side so big I could almost put my arm through.
knock on wood, i sure hope that will not happen to me.

In golf as in life it is the follow through that makes the difference.
What happened? Detonation? One lean cylinder?
I thought mine was bad:
My oil pump is gone. Haven't take the crank bearing off so don't know if I can use the bottom or not. Mine was caused by putting gease on the cams
Well like I said before the valves were hitting the piston. All of that was caused by having a 20R head(smaller combustion chamber), TRD stage 2 cam, and the machine shop milled the head(probably more then I was told). Because of all of that is why the valves were hitting. All four intake valves were hitting the pistons it is just that the number 4 cylinder got the weakest and went first.
I thought my piston was f**ked, but yours definitely tops it.
I was wondering if I made it worse then you or not. Apparently I made it worse then yours big time. I am thinking now I am going to find a 22R short block and build it with low comp pistons, put together my 22R head, convert the car to EFI and then go the turbo route. I know that is odd comming from me but I think it is time for me to try my hand at this forced induction thing.
I always do something to a motor that i did work on that has saved my ass a couple times and might have saved yours, get it all together and ready to start up, leave the plugs out and coil unhooked, get a half inch drive ratchet and a socket on the crank pulley bolt and turn it over by hand and listen and feel

Well you aren't really going to be able to tell if the valves are hitting the piston or not by cranking the motor by hand. By cranking it by hand you are not producing the force that the engine is producing at operating speeds. Plus the friction and the heat expand the materials in there so the only way you can tell before hand is to clay check it which is what I should have done but I was too stupid to.
dont blambe yourself, ive seen worse than this on motor work, i remember working at pontiac, there was a guy with a grand am that shook like hell and never had the power it should from brand new, i got it in an no compression on number 3 cyl, I pulled the head and nothing wrong there until I pushed the piston down the hole with my finger popped the pan and the rod was never hooked to the crank at the factory, no rod cap or bearing and the car had over 15k miles on it, thats almost as good as ford forgetting to tighten the main cap bolts on the 3.0 v6 when it first came out, there were quite a few motors comming in with the oil lite on and the main caps lying in the oil pan
How long did your hybrid last? I had basically the same setup without the side drafts in a 4x4. Normally got 8 months from a head gasket and set of bolts.

I had it running for 5 miles on the road and about about 30 minutes of it running in my driveway.
