How do I change the starter?

Hi, I'm new here. I did a search to see if this has been addressed before, but couldn't find anything that matches exactly what I need.

I have a 91 Celica ST, 1.6L, 5-speed.

I believe the starter has died on me. I've had this happen before, and just took my car in to get it replaced, but money is kind of tight right now. When I try to start the car, it makes a click, and now it makes a pop after the click. I've talked to a few mechanics, and everyone seems to agree with me that it's the starter. I'm just going to go buy the part, and try to change it myself, but changing a starter is one of the few things I've never even attempted to do on my car. Does anybody know where I can find a walk-through, or some instructions? Pics could be fantastic, as well.

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

starter.

Im also having problems. It is a clicking noise on my account. I have been advised to Check the Battery, just incase there is not enough power to actually start the motor because my battery is very low indeed.

Let me know how you get on. hopefully mine wont be the starter motor because like yourself money is tight!! but I know I am able to buy the part and get my friends brother to fit it.

First take a look and find the starter. Some is easy to get to, some is behind the exhaust manifold, some is on firewall side of the engine. The starter is only 1 wire and 2 bolts. Nothing special just unplug, unbolt and take it out.

Starter on my 5S-FE is easy to get to. You can see it right behind the tranny dip stick.

You can get the clicking sound either if the battery is dying, or also if enough current cant pass through your wiring. Sometimes just corrosion on the terminals and clips can kill it. Try cleaning them up too.

pineapple i looked at your picutre of the 5s-fe. my starter is mounted on the back side of the motor under the intake manifold. I also have a 91' celica ST with the 1.6. I'll tell you.... it wasnt the most fun project ive ever done!!!!! haha hope its your battery or corrosion. make sure you check the ground on the negitve battery cable too and check or corrosion inside the insulation. the most common sound heard from a bad starter is a high shearing sound when you try to turn the engine over.

clicking can also be your starting solenoid which i believe on our 1.6 is attached to the starter and won't be able to be replaced. if it is that then you would have to replace your starter any ways. BUMMER
