Motor Remove/install

Hello everyone, I just acquired a 89 Celica GT convertible for free(my sister blew up the motor). I was wondering if theres some kind of a write up on how to replace the motor. It has a 4cylinder hooked up to a 5 speed(not entirely sure which motor it is, its not turbo, ill check what motor it has tommorow). On average how long do these trannys last? The car just turned over 200K. Also how much do these motors cost on average from a junkyard? Sorry about so many questions. Thanks in advance for the help.

of course the life of a trans will depend on the dirvers driving style. I had to replace my trans after 170,000 miles. If its a GT modle there is a good chance it has a 5s-fe (2.2L) motor on it, which has a different trans than my car. i would guess that a used motor from junkyard may run anywhere from $300 to $500. I'm not sure the life span on thoes trannys but again it depends on how it was driven. and if you are a first timer with replacing a motor you may want to buy a manual and give a buddy a call.

89 Celica GT = 3SFE, 2.0l

the manual trannys are pretty good, you should be ok if the car has been driven decently, you know, just change the clutch and all that mess.

That engine can also be found in the 86-89 Celica ST, GT, 87-91 Camry. Price at a junk yard wont be more than $400ish i imagine, but you may want to consider looking into an Imported JDM engine, lower miles, more power, cheaper. run a search about imported engines if you have any questions.

Yeah its the 3SFE 2.0L. I have a manual but I was wondering if there are any tips on it(Im part of a Jeep forum and I got a lot of tips for it that aren't in the manual). I am probably going to replace it with a stock motor because I'm fairly broke and just need something with good milage. I have a 88 Jeep Comanche with an 4.0L I-6 and it sucks on gas. How much harder would it be to swap in a stock turbo motor?

if you wanted to go turbo route look on ebay... they usualy have the 3s-gte motor from the jdm and sometimes it comes with ecu + wiring. if it really is a 3s-ge motor than your trans will bolt right up.. the cool thing about the 3s-gte is that its capiable of an easy 400 horse. fun motor!

as for tips about installation + removal ..... if you are going to replace the motor anytime soon you might as well just pull the engine and trans at the same time. + drop it out the bottom.

In the haynes manual it says to take it from the top. I think that would be easier than from the bottom.

over the past month I've pulled 2 5sfe's. I pulled them both from the bottom and have to say that it was quite easy espesially considering that it was my first time

if you are a one man team and have an engine hoist then i might be tempted to go through the top. if you have a lift and a buddies help drop it through the bottom it will go much faster.

if you are pulling the engine and trans, which is much easier than just pulling the engine, as long as you have a hoist it seems that it would be much easier to lift it out from above than dropping it.

ive replaced my transmission and we dropped it out the bottom, but i had a lift to work on so it made things a lot easier, but when i pulled the engine and tranny together i pulled it out with the hoist, which isnt hard at all if you get the hoist high enough and the engine tilted enough. dropping it down would be really hard, that engine is very heavy, how would you move it?
