Hey All,
I have a 1992 Celica GT 2.2L which hesitates and surges when I punch the gas. If I gently accelerate it is fine. I have changed the Oxygen Sensor, Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Injectors Cleaned, EGR is fine, Timing is right on, no vacuum leaks, and the intake canister is crack free.
Does anyone have any suggestions?? This is totally pissing me off!! I even reset the ECU after all the work was done and it is still hesitating. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks, and I am new on here so Hi!!!
Dude Im having the same problem with my 93 GTS. Hesitation between 2 and 3000 rpms when I punch it, it is so anoying I hate driving it. I havent figured on a problem yet other then maybe it is fuel related as I checked all plugs, wires, and distributor. Havent checked the injectors yet as there a bitch to get too. I am new here as well and would love to kno if anyone had some input on this issue.
I have the same problem in my 91 GT-S. Mine does it whether in gear or not and will only rev to 4000rpms before it goes way lean and shuts off. It will start to rev again after it has fell to about 3800. It will not rev under any circumstance past 4800 (once in last 3 months.) I have replaced:
Timing Belt
Igntion wires,
plugs
ignitor
cap,
rotor,
fuel filter,
cleaned fuel system,
gutted cat,
oxygen sensor,
map sensor,
throttle position sensor,
vav valve (something emissions Just a guess)
EGR Valve,
Cold start injector (thought it might be seeping),
transmission service,
changed tranmission filter,
I know my torque converter is good,
going to do the fuel pump this coming weekend.

I feel your pain dude. I've been tracking this thread for a solution also. It only happens when the engine warms up. I'll probably do a resistance check on the water temp sensor over the weekend.
I was having a similar problem with my 91 GT (considered a 92 per parts stores) and it was my cats. The front cat is dealer item and quite expensive, the second cat is cheaper. While they were removing my cats they showed me the lower O2 sensor was completely burned up. So, now my car runs like a new one, two cats and two O2 sensors later.
1 is visable under car before muffler...the other is up in engine compartment right after exhaust manifold beginning...only GT models....first one dealer item....lots of $$$$. I couldnt believe it...when they pulled exhaust off they showed me the 2nd O2 sensor which was completely burnt. Also, parts stores showed only 1 on 91 GT and 2 cats/02s on a 92 GT. I think there was a change in mid 91 production on the GT. So you may only have 1 cat if your 91 GT was built before the change date. I do not know that date. I only found this all out when I went to get my cat replaced and they showed me 2 cats. Also, A GT-S is different than a GT so I do not know if it applies to a GT-S.
sounds ALOT like the prob i had last summer, by the time i cleaned/changed/swapped all the parts out i spent 2 months and about $600 to fig out it was the $30 map sensor. its bounced around low rpm range esp. 2k. the sri was taking so much air it was freaking loud, i had to put the stock box back on just so listen for the vac leak i was sure it had. turns out it was the map, kinda cold in n j now but find one at a pick n pull and try it. celicas are compatible if i remember right with prizm for the map, and maybe a tercel
I never thought I had a vaccuum leak. When it warms up I will have to listen for that. Thanks. I am fairly sure I only have the one that attaches to the exhaust manifold. Thanks.
