Engine Light Question?
I went into my local mechanic's shop to have fuel system on my 2000 celica flushed. After getting the car back the check engine light came on. I took it back in they ran more tests and then had the light turned off. After starting the car a few times the light came back on. I took it back in and aksed them why it is coming on. They ran more tests and told me it was running rich and I needed to put the factory spark plugs in it. So I did, thinking it would fix the problem. After a few more starts the light came back on. I took it back and they told me that they would start charging me for the tests because everything they touched with fuel system cleaning was working correctly. They also told me that I needed to take out the K&N filter because it could be causeing the problems also. I put a factory filter in it and had the light turned off to see if it would stay off.
I just need to know if the K&N filter deposited some oil onto my Mass air flow sensor which might be causeing the problem. I say this because I called a few different toyota dealers to see if they have heard of 2000 celicas having problems with the K&N filters. I would like to know if there is a way to clean the mass air flow sensor without damaging it or if I just need to get a new one or if it sounds like it might be an O2 sensor. The code the mechanic gave me was a PO172. I would appreciate any feed back if anyone else has run into the same problem. Thanks
