Can I just do the strut cartridges on the rear of the freecar? (90 Celica ST) or do I have to do the assembly?
How can I tell?

Most replacements are cartridges, I think that the only assembly ones are OEM and some KYB. (not sure about the KYB)

I believe that most toyota's are assembly only (sealed), and don't accept cartridges. If it's an unsealed type, I would suggest just buying cartridges for all around and finishing em up.

If you want close to stock (slightly stiffer) feel and great price, i suggest the KYB GR-2's. I found the cheapest on www.tirerack.com It's what I have on my 95 camry, quiet as ever!

Hope this helps
