Hi...
I am looking into buying an '88 Toyota Celica 4WD Turbo. The car has 212000 Kilometers (125000 miles) on it. Are there certain things that I will have to be extra carefull about when bying it...what should I watch out for on that modell? Are those 2L engines reliable and what is the life expectancy of the turbo? Thanks for any kind of info on that...
BUY IT! If it breaks, repair it! It's an extremely rare car, and it needs to be kept alive!
That car is built like a rock. Best Gen of all All-Tracs. You shouldn't have many problems with it. I just wouldn't suggest it as a daily driver. That will wear it out a lot quicker.

First gen 3sgte is weakest of all 3sgte's but even there its a tank ..I say buy it and get yourself a gen3 3sgte ...
Meh..... 3rd gens are overrated. 2nd gen for lifeeeeee . I like having parts availbile without being able to speak 5,000 languages and having out of country 'connections'. I coudln't imagine having to find spare crap for a 3rd gen
Any AllTrac is a life time project. So if you want something that just work with no maintainance, get something else. Otherwise keep 2-3k in the bank all the time and have fun.
Thanks for all the info guys...
I test drove it on Saturday and it's just amazing. All you hear is that beautiful sound of the turbo...but...the bad part about the test drive was, that the turbo stopped working after about 4 kilometers of driving it. No...I wasnt beating on the car...i was acctually going slow. It just stopped working...but there was no blue smoke coming out the exhaust...isn't that usually what happens once the turbo is blown...? The turbo gauge stopped working and you couldn't hear the turbo anymore. So what could that be...and how much is it to fix...if the turbo really is broken?
Your biggest problems gonna be rust, they are a killer on those Celicas, getting hold of replacement body panels is a major pain aswell. If the turbo stopped working on your test run I`d walk away, its one thing to have problems with your own car, but to have problems before you buy it surely must be an sign. A friend of my`n has a gen 1 GT4 and its nothing but problems, its in the garage or running badly at least 50% of its life. Dont buy it just for the sake of buying it. If you must buy it, get yourself a good tool kit, a trolly jack and some axel stands, your gonna need em! Oh and visit www.gt4oc.net it will save you a fortune with advice and tips from GT4 owners all over the world.
