Basically it controls the air and fuel ratio of your vehicle, but it's fully custom so if you add a turbo later you can re-tune for it. They are a lot lower in price now but still expensive, but it's a small price to control what goes on in your motor. Some are better than others by allowing more points to control, but they all work pretty much the same.

It replace the ECU on fuel managment. It allow use of different air intake sensor (MAP, MAF), adjustable fuel map, ignition map. Sometime stock ECU is still needed for tranny, AC and other function.
Stanalone should be programmable which mean you can adjust its setting as often as you needed.

piggybacks are cheaper- check out the greddy emanage, and apexi safc2. the second seems to be more popular, but i hear better things about the first.

unless you are going all out performance, a piggyback controller is what you want... a standalone will cost you an arm and a leg. If you dont have a ton of mods to take full advantage of a standalone then you are wasting yoru money.

A piggyback still uses the stock ECU to control everything, but it modifies the amount of fuel delivered by changing the airflow signal to the ECU.
