Canada Howdy Folks, Im New and Having a Problem

Evening Folks, names Kyle Dixon and I searched you folks out cause well, I drive a Celica, a 1986 GT to be exact, 5 Spd manual, with the 2S-e Engine and i havent owned it for more than 2 full weeks and shes giving me guff already.

I was out visiting a friend out of town when the timing belt sheared, So i took it to the mechanic in the town i was in, and explained that before i purchased this car it had a new timing Belt, Water Pump and Alternator installed by the previous owner, also a mechanic, and seeing so that the belt should not have gone and sheared this soon. So he took my car in and I figured, Ok, So today i get the call i dreaded, the "Mr Dixon, theres more to it than just a belt", my poor 19 yr old heart skipped a few beats and i was automatically thinking, shite i cratered the heads. Nope, turns out the Oilpump, has seized, completely, the exterior portion still freewheels, however the internals, as the mech described it have seized up completely and she is fucked and i need a new oilpump.
Heres my dilemma, and sorry for not being breif troops but im at a loss. The mech says the only way to install it is to pull the engine, pull the old, throw in a new and wabang, and now ownign a few cars by now i know that pulling the block will mean $$$Cha ching, so is their another way to install this, couldnt i just go through the oilpan? cause the mech wants to pull the block to pop the pan.

So whats your folks, advice on this, what are my options and whats the most economical route to go about this, cause im a reserveist in Canada, and we dont pull much coin.

Thanks In Advance
kyle

you need a second opinion on it. too often a mechanic will try to sell you everything for such a small problem.

that being said:

i flipped through my version of the service manual, the one for the 5th gens, and you dont need to pull the engine. in fact all you do is jack up the side, pull the engine mount off and stuff, and go at it from there. the oil pump is on the timing belt, not near the oil pan. while its possible that this is different between 4th and 5th gen I HIGHLY DOUBT IT. say no to pulling engine (unless the crank and everything else is seized, which means you're going to need a new shortblock anyways)

book time on changing the pump should only be like 3-4 hours, i think. but i am not sure. dont quote me on it. 6 is too much. maybe for pulling the engine but that isn't necessary.

make sure that the crank isn't seized before diving into this. you dont want him doing everything only to find out it was a waste and the problem is not completely fixed.

you're doing it yourself? not to discourage you but a timing belt job isn't exactly very beginner friendly. let us know how it works out.

(ps, not trying to insult you if you aren't a beginner, but thats just the feeling that i get)

good luck!

the engine's sohc, right? it'll be easier than on an engine with dohc, less stuff to line up. you should get a friend to help you, it helps to have someone to talk to ; )

be happy you only have a spring tensioner, the hydrolic one is a bastard.

I have rebuilt my entire 3S-GE, and it is not that bad. If the S engines all share any sort of design, the oil pump will be easy to pop off of the side of the engine. You will need to remove the wheel, engine mount, all the shrouding, and any other bits that get in the way. Might be beneficial to just remove the strut too for manuevering.

There IS a pickup that goes into the oil pan, but on my engine it is a separate part in the oil pan, and not integral to the oil pump, so it should be only a few screws... but you will probably need a pulley puller to get the crank pulley off, otherwise, the timing cover does not remove.

Pick up a harmonic balance remover for $20 at Ukranian Tyre.

p.s.: there is a shop called I.M. Auto parts in town, (no relation to me) that I found that has every oddball toyota part known to man for REALLY cheap. I got a new starter for $50, no kidding. It is in the west end on the north side. Look em' up for the seals and bits you might need.

Jamie again

yeah, that little guy is the goods, and does not screw you around. tell you what, when you get it fixed, bring by an oil sample of your used oil to the Finning oil lab in the west end, at 170th street, and I will check it for free. Just north of the Wendy's. I want to see how other people's Celicas wear. I have been doing used oil analysis on my Celica for two years now (as I am a used oil technician), and want some other cars to compare my results too!

Jamie

Hell, is you still have some, bring by some of the old oil before it died and we can see what is in it!

Will do Jaime, I havent yet drained it cause i havent been able to get out to Onoway to do the switch, doing as such on my days off this Tuesday and Wedensday. Greyhound to the car and hopefully driving the girl home.
gotta find somewheres to rent a 3/8" drive metric deep socket set, a pulley puller, torque wrench and a timing gun by then for cheap though.
