How do you know the pedal switch works if the lights don't go on when you press the pedal?

It can be a faulty turn signal switch, but it'd be the first one I ever heard of going bad on a toyota.

considering the brake lights are the problem, I really doubt that the turn signal switch is where he should be looking - toyota or otherwise

i had a problem with my brake lights that when I hit the brakes, all the rear lights would go out... but the tail lights would work otherwise... i had a bad ground somewhere in my pigtails, so I replace all four of them, and now they work just fine... for now...

lots of wire splicing though

Check your ground connection point and fuses first!

If on a car with yellow turns this is correct. However he didn't say the problem was on the celica. On American cars and any others that share a bulb with brake lights and turn signals the turn switch interupts the brake signal to allow the bulb to flash. It is actually a common repair.
