What is the difference between the early Gen 5 Celica GT and GTS? From what I can find, they both use the 2.2l 5SFE but the GTS is about 100lbs heavier. Does the ST version use the 4AFE or 7AFE?
For the Gen 5 & 6 Celica is there any that have the 3SGE stock?
the gt AND GTS are basically the same i think the front bumper is diffrent. and the gts has more accesories. i think the st has 4afe. i think the 3sge was only in jap. but i could be wrong.,
GT and GT-S are not the same but close; GT-S is more like a souped up GT, they do share the same engine but the GT-S has a wider body (flared fenders) than the GT, besides that there are a bunch of stuff the GT does not have reason why the GT-S is heavier. (GT-S has 4 disc brakes, fog lights, cruise control, SRS air bag, ABS, Sunroof, System 10 audio, 215/50 tires, Alltrac type bumper cover) Maybe I left something out.
As for engines in the NADM and some other countries
ST (AT180)= 7A-FE or 4A-FE
STX (AT180)= Dealer loaded ST
GT (ST182) = 5S-FE and 3S-GE on JDM/Euro spec cars
GT-S (ST184) = 5S-FE
Alltrac/GT-4 (ST185) = 3S-GTE
The 3S-GE was available on 5th and 6th Gen Celicas anywhere outside the U.S.A..
2nd gen 3S-GE on 5th Gens with 165 HP
3rd gen 3S-GE on 6th gens with 180 HP

USDM ST is 4A-FE, 4 bolt, I think, smaller dics and rear drum.
GT - rear drum, 5 bolt
GTS - wide body OPTION, System 10 option, ABS on 92+, 5 bolt
3S-GE only come in 4th gen GTS in US.
The 5th gen ST was 4 bolt 90-92 and 5 bolt in the later 1/2 of 92. There is a significant weight difference between the GT and GTS weight... something like 100-200 pounds. The ONLY major difference between the two are the flared fenders and various additional options. Also, I believe the GTS only came in a hatchback model, while the GT came in both coupe and hatch. I believe the ST only came in coupe form. The GT had rear discs staring in the later 1/2 of 91 and went to the larger 275mm front brakes in 92.

I was looking for somethng to replace the '90 Prelude Si 2.1L I had before. It was a nice car but could use more power. I thought that a Gen5 Celica with a 3SGE will do...but now I realize it doesn't exist. The 5SFE powered Celica is probably as fast as the Prelude, but I wanted something more...
An All-Trac would be nice, but those are more than I want to pay for a Celica and those are very rare. I also don't feel inclined to do an engine swap
You kidding...? I have a 3S-GE powered 5th Gen Celica, ok, maybe not in Canada or in the States but it does exist and engine swap is no THAT difficult if you have a GT

Gen 5 Celica with 3SGE did not exist in the USA I mean. Getting a 3SGE Celica here in California would mean a lot of custom work and probably a pain in the ass trying to pass smog.
A 5th Gen GTS is about $3500. Where can I get the engine from and how much work or how much would it cost to do a 3SGE swap? Would that cost more than buying a 5th Gen GT4?
My Prelude had 140 HP and 135 ftlb and it was a 2.1 and weighed about the same as a GT. So probably it would be a tie in a race between the two.

1990 Celica All Trac with 120 000 miles, looks like it has a muffler, I just emailed the seller if the entire exhaust was done, intake, turbo timer, and BOV done to it. Does US$6300 sound like too much?
6300 is about right, you can probably talk him down a bit though. don't ever buy a car without looking at it, especially one of these!
at the wheels, after you factor in drive train losses, the 3sgte will only have about 20 more hp. but, then you can pump the boost to 15... figure about 10-11 bhp per lb of boost... big difference compared to whatever the first mod is on a 3sge
