I am new to this forum and had a question for the Toyota inclined. I have a 1988 Celica GT-S with the 3SGE engine, I lost the engine last night and am looking for a replacement. This is my first import of any kind. The problem I am having is that everyone I talk to tells me something different, they made 2 different 3SGE's (non-turbo) one with internal EGR and one with external EGR, so the big question is, what is the best way to know which I one I have, internal or external? If need be I can snap a shot of the engine, if it will help. The internal EGR 3SGE seems to be a hard one to come by without spending $3K. Any help would be a ton of help.. Thanks in advance..
HUH...? The EGR is located externally on all Toyotas, seriously I've never heard of an internal EGR.
As for the engine you can get a 1st generation 3S-GE (the one you have) for about $500 and a 3S-GTE (turboed) with wiring harness, ECU and the whole shebang for a swap for aprox. $ 1.000

The 3S-GE is a noble beast. I have one in my 88'. The internal system of which you speak has a passage that runs through the head of the car, and then exits the top of the head near the right end of the cam covers and goes up to the throttle body. The external one has a pipe (brass I think) that goes from the exhaust manifold all the way around to the throttle body. It does not really matter which you have, they both perform the same task.
BTW: When I rebuilt my 3S-GE I had to get the head welded because the exhaust gasses had worn a hole in the head where they take the corner to go up to the throttle body, so maybe the external one has its advantages.
I don't plan on having that happen again, which is why I disabled my EGR, and am presently keeping the temperature down with some increased airflow over my intake manifold, rather than fill it with corrosive exhaust gasses.
Well I pulled the cam covers toady, #2 is full of coolant, so the head has to come off and go to the machinst. Pretty extensive stuff pulling the head with twin cam setup. Bought a Chiltons to help walk me through it. Will have it off tomorrow(have to go to work and get more tools). Then to the machine shop monday.
You speak of eliminating the EGR, could you PLEASE specfy how this is done??? Alond with extra cooling to the intake??
I also am thinking about replacing the cams, any ideas on the lift, ect I should go with??? I don't want anything to radical, daily driver is the key. I hear aftermarket cams for the Toyotas are extremely soft, true or not???
