3SGE Service

Hi guys,

I've just bought a 3SGE powered ST162 Celica today. I also bought another 3SFE powered ST162 off a friend of mine (this one has a blown engine), that's right, two celicas in one day!

Now the 3SGE doesn't seem to be any faster than my friends old 3SFE before it exploded, and it doesn't seem to want to pull all the way to redline. Here's my planned service for later this week is

1. New 10w30 oil and oil filter
2. New Air Filter (stock replacement)
3. New spark plugs

I've topped up the power steering fluid and checked the current oil level and it's good.

Now, what other things can i check that might need replacing, this is a daily driver cheap/reliable kind of car, so i'm not wanting to do anything that costs alot of money unless i have to. Remember that i have a spare 3SFE laying around.

I remember from owning my ST184 a while ago that people suggested checking the 02 sensor, how do i do this? I figure that it would be a swap job if it was broken, but how do i know? What other things should i check?

Also, any other general maintance tips for the engine or the car? I run it on BP Ultimate (98 Octane) and oil change every 5,000 km's.

Thanks for any help guys, celica's rule!

for the oil i suggest using Shell Helix 20W50 in the yellow can. My 5SFE celica loves the stuff, engine is much quieter and also fuel consumption has dropped a lot.

what part of australia are you from?

Hi,

How do i check my timing? On the 5SFE i just bridged E1 and TE1, but on this 3SGE there is no TE1 connector so i'm not sure what to do.

Also, where in the car is the fuel filter? How hard is it to replace?

Thanks guys

the tvis flaps are held by vacuum, all ya gotta do is get it running and raise it up, pull the vacuum hose of the diaphram on the tvis plate right where the intake manifold meets the head, when ya do the little arm will move and they will be open then, if no movement they are probably stuck shut

Hi, thanks for all your help. I'm going to check it out tonight.

Do you have a picture or any other information because i think i know what you are saying but i'm not 100% sure about this. So i pull the vacuum hose off the plenum that has TVIS written on it and i should see something move?

the diaphram can be seen from underneath right where the intake manifold comes up to the head

I don't really know what i'm looking for, i'm new to all of this but i would like to learn.

Here's a few pics i found on the internet, can you let me know if any of these help at all at showing me what to do. I know what the vacuum hoses are but i'm not sure what the diaphram is.

So i look under the intake manifold and there should be a thin black vacuum hose plugging into a diaphram (what does that look like) and then i should see a little arm (what does it look like, where is it) that should move. If it moves, then that means TVIS valves are working correctly, and if it doesn't, they must be stuck or broken right?

Does anybody have a photo of the diaphram or the little tvis arms?

I got these two diagrams
http://www.mr2.com/ARTICLE/PICTURES/TVIS-VSV.gif
http://www.turbomr2.com/MR2/Reference/TVIS/TVIS-05.gif
i don't know if they will help at all.

Any other info would be great. If the arm does move when i take the hose off, can i try revving the car in neutral to see if the arm moves once i get to a certain RPM? When does TVIS kick in? Is it at a certain RPM at WOT or just at a certain RPM or what?

Thanks for all the help, google doesn't seem to help me on this one.

Thanks guys!

Here's another page about TVIS, could you point out on which picture where i should look for the arms that move, and which hose to disconnect?

Thanks

ok, the second drawing, it has actuator dead center under the intake, thats it, and it pulls on these 2 little arms, get it running and raise it up, look up the back side of the motor and right under the intake is the round actuator, get a flashlite, unplug it and see if the arms move and see if the vacuum hose has vacuum in it too

I had the same issues with my 87 celica GTS which had a 3SGE engine. Check all your connections just recently I dropped $4,000 into a complete motor. When my mechanic was taking out the engine and tranny, the MAF sensor was not hooked up the O2 sensor was disconnected along with the power steering sensor. There was alot that someone disconnected. I had the engine rebored over to 25mm and the block repunched with new performance pistons. Before I shot one of the main bearings the oil pump always had low pressure which made two out of four pistons become oval. This was noticed at the machine shop when the block was getting rebored and checked.

Yea, i couldn't get to see any of the TVIS stuff like the vacuum hose or the little latch thingie, i tried all angles from above with bonnet off, and from underneath but still no luck.

My cars happy until about 5000rpm, then it's not so happy to rev, like it will still go to readline, but it feels like it isn't running as well as it should.

Is there another way I can check TVIS? Could it be something else?
