Hey ?'s for the all-trac guys...

Hey I'm trying to settle a little dispute between me and my DSM buddies...
How many of you have had frequent or any transmission problems? Please say your year & if you've modified your car or not. (anything counts... intake, exhaust, cams, turbo, etc.)
Thanks in advance!

I've got a '91 w/117k miles - no tranny problems so far (knock on wood). Running higher than stock boost, aftermarket exhaust, K&N filter - stock turbo though.

I've got an '88 ST165 with 100,000 miles on it, all's well with the tranny.
Here's my engine bay, throw me some spare change, heheh :
(Never mind the red circle, I was helping somebody out...)

94 st205, running over 300BHP, no problems at all with the trans or the clutch (Standard), transmition is pretty strong in the GT4 not sure about the clutch but its done the job for the past year or so.

DSM trannys are uber crap and that is public knowledge. Any Toyota tranny will outlast any DSM tranny under the same conditions

I have a 92 all-trac, changed the clutch but the rest is bone stock. I´m planing on some mods next few weeks, so we´ll see how everything is going to hold on.

They're pretty much bullet proof.
I've heard of one guy breaking his transfer case, but he welded his rearend, so....
There are [relatively] quite a few guys pushing 400+ whp with absolutly no breakage.
Only problem with them is the syncros wear out, unless you have a CS or ST205 transmission.

I've had 173xxx on my 93, I've got 152xxx on my 92, only problem is the 92 used to grind a bit in 4th. Synchromesh fixed that.

144,000 miles..........'93 All-Trac.............have a slightly used (<24K miles) tranny in it now. 3rd gear exited stage left with extreme prejudice about three months ago while tuning on the dyno. No problems other than that. NONE with the clutch..........but with this kind of hp, I opted for the HKS twin plate.

Well I`ve had her off the road for two weeks now . had a new stainless exhaust fitted, got a stainless 3" decat pipe (a right pain in the arse to fit) which I had polished internally and gasflowed, an Apexi AVC-R boost controller (fitted and getting set up tomorrow all being well). Boost set to 1 bar at the moment, will be upped to 1.1 bar when things have settled down a bit. Throttle body cleaned and polished, turbo overhauled and gasflowed a little, new plugs. chargecooler cleaned out, inlet manifold cleaned up internally, new brake flexi`s, new rear wheel bearings. full fluid change, all oils and coolants, new carbon fibre radiator ducting to help keep things cool.

The decat pipe makes a huge difference, the car revs much more freely, turbo spools up alot quicker, sounds alot more throaty, now spits flames from the exhaust on both up and down gear shifts and the extra boost .......well you can guess what that does. next will be new brakes all round and a water injection kit probably running more than 300bhp but thats a conservative guesstimate. after that will be new suspension and eventually a new ECU. but a bit at a time, you cant rush these things. looking forward to the test run at the weekend, watch out scoobies, here comes insanity
