Hey all. I was a regular until about a year ago on celica.net. It seems that a bunch of stuff went down after Clayton left and then boards split up...oh well...I will learn about that later.
In any case, if any of you remember a guy named John L from celica.net and know how to get ahold of him, I am trying to catch him online or any other way for that matter. I think that he might be able to help, and as we already have a repoire, it might be easier if I talked to him, but I will lay it out for you as well.
I am hearing a clunking sould from the engine upon decelleration in 1st or 2nd gear, and other weird noises at times when I shift. I also, from time to time - but NOT ALWAYS, have problems shifting. i.e. it WONT go into gear, or it goes in with great difficulty and shifting is not smooth like it should be. Is this my tranny or is it my clutch. Putting it in 5th gear and going kills the engine without any slippage, so i dont think its my clutch, but hey, this area is totally new to me, so i dont know much. I have been told by a mechanic that the noises I hear might be anything from a drive shaft to an issue with the front differential. Then another told me that it could be the tranny and that I should look into getting a used one and having it rebuilt. In any case, i wanted to hear from the guys with experience in this field and/or have some knowledge of this area on the 5th gen ST Celica.
What I am looking for is more ways to pinpoint what this problem is, possible problems that I could be facing and what repairs I may need. With the repairs, I am looking for DIY options as well as professional mechanic options - estimated costs and maybe even places to source the needed parts.
If anyone on here has ANY info on John L or ANY advice that might be able to help me out, i would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know through here or email me at

Thanks again in advance guys, i hope to be on here more as soon as I get my high speed internet hooked up. Browsing on a cell phone connection is a PITA.
BTW - the car in question is a 5 speed manual transmission, 1991 Celica ST - 1.6L 4afe engine. No major mods besides the exhaust/intake.
