Gen1 engine ID

Hallo,

I just got a 77 hatchback celica for free!!

the previous owner said that the engine was replaced with a 22R (originally a 20R) How can i identify what kind of car donated it? and ID numbers i can look for?

usually the VIN number sez the engine number in it but i donno, check and see what the numbers are on later model celicas (like a 79 or 80)

Does the front of the valve cover have a sticker on it. 20R's and 22R's came with a sticker on the front of the valve cover the 20R's said 20R on it and the 22R's said 22R on it. and the fuel injected 22R's said 22RE on them. Other then that early 22R's and all 20R's are the same from 76-84..on the outside that is. on the inside they are different with the 22R have a larger displacement and the 20R having different intake ports and better combustion chambers.
