EGR cleaning

I went to buy an egr valve today and it was out of stock so it is now on order from the dealer.
In the meantime I remembered an old 2-stroke cylinder head trick for removing carbon build up.
Use gasket remover which is safe on aluminum and really seems to "boil" out the carbon. My egr is no longer stuck but as always time will tell if the code 71 stays away. Hopefully it will work and I can return the egr valve since I have not picked it up yet
ps the egr valve was on the work bench when i did this process. Alittle compressed air helps too as you acuate the diapham.

Can you post some more detailed instructions? My Celica has code 71 and I'm not sure how to go about cleaning this thing out.

How much is the EGR valves from the dealer?

EGR and gasket was $172 and they are the cheapest of the 3 local one for me. Marina Del Rey.
I just went to check the vaccum and I think I punched a hole in the diapham with the screwdriver when trying to acuate the darn thing. Looks like I will be getting the new one after all. I could not find any hoses that were knocked off, damn did it again.

The dealer told me to replace the egr modulator first and its a $65 part. Might consider that.

I unscrewed the two bolts holdiing the throttle cable on and releasted the cable, it snaps right out and moved it out of the way so I could unscrew the copper tube at the block. I think it is a 23 mm. Couldn't get to the one the conects directly to the egr. I removed the gas temp sensor that's screwed into the egr after disconnecting the wire to it. There are two nuts(12mm) that holds the egr to the throttle body which need to be removed. It just lifts back and then up and out. Mine had lots of carbon build up and I was able to get it out but I did screw up I think by punching a hole in the rubber diapham. I was able to push the diaphargm up and hold it in place by putting my finger over the smallhole on top. Hmmm, maybe I just need a new gasket, leaking vacuum somewhere.
I used the gasket remover sold by the same company that sells all those different types of liquid gasket, getting old can't remember the name. Sprayed and soaked and acuated numereous times and then cleaned it all out with wd40 and some compressed air. It was messy.
I see you are in socal so maybe when i figure mine out and if you live somewhat close I could help you a little. I have the '91 factory manuals.

How important is the little filter inside the EGR vacuum modulator? I took mine apart today for cleaning, and instead of the little white fluffy thing that i saw in my manual.. i had this

There was soot everywhere, it had made its way through the filter and was all over the inside of the unit. I cleaned it all up nicely with WD40 and compressed air, but i dont want to put this filter back. I made a home-made one consisting of a circle of towel, and 2 circles of t-shirt material.. What do you think about this makeshift one?

What does this filter do anyway, im puzzled because I was under the impression that the vacuum modulator isnt in contact with any of the EGR gases in the first place, just clean air.

Suggestions welcomed !

Even when you use the original filter they want you to put it in coarse side up so it might be kind of important.
That is pretty nasty for sure!

Hey! I found this after seeing EXACTLY the same thing on my Camry. I thought i'd take a look at it's condtion, and instead of the nice white fliter, i have this dirty looking thing. I can't clean it very well, as it's just old. What does it do, and what happens if I put a new one in?

Thanks.

The filter becomes sooted if the EGR diaphram is ruptured. The exhaust gasses can then come in contact with the filter.

My EL code 71 came back on plus I get no vacuum at the EGR so something is messed up.

Right, now to answer your initial problem. VSV... they go bad more often then anything else. Depending on the engine they can be a pain to get to, but I would remove it and bench test it first.

I have wanted to check it for some time now but I have not been able to find it from the top on the engine. I think I have to come up from under.

hey maxemilly i think if the EGR diaphram was ruptured then there would be more indications of it than some soot in the filter. there are no codes and the car runs properly so im pretty sure the EGR system is working as it should.

has anyone bought a new filter from toyota? im curious if its available and what price

I jacked up the car and found the VSV but could not get my hands close to it without removing, I'm guessing the cross member.
In the meantime I found that one of the two air lines from the bottom of the power streering pump was snapped off. Hard to say who did this but I have a good idea it was when they did the clutch. Hacks for sure.
My question is; could this newly found broken part have any effect on the vacuum related to the EGR.
the eGR still fails the test where it should have high vacuum(13") at 2500 rpm's with the R hose removed and vacuum sent to the vac modulator from the throttle body.
