Alright, quick lowdown:
I have a 90 ST with a 4afe engine, standard shift.
I have been checking those jap engine importers in cali, 4afes are running around 450 plus shipping, and they are now selling corolla 1.5 5AFE's as a replacement option, for around $195.
My questions:
first of all, are these places safe to do business with? I'd most likely order with american express, so the transaction would be covered. All the different websites look suspiciously the same, can anyone recommend a good one?
second, provided I find a good one, they say you have to use the components off your engine. Well my head is fine, but its all wore out, 225k on everything. the head was taken to a machine shop and I had it checked for level (warpage) and dipped in the cleaning tank. When I reinstalled it, I messed up, and it blew again (duh). But i know I can use their head, its the other stuff I worry about (water injection manifold, fuel rail, injectors, etc).
On the 5afe tip, is this engine REALLY a drop in replacement? They ship them stripped of everything but the timing belt and head assembly. Are the parts off my 4AFE compatible with the 5AFE? I don't want to 'save' 300 dollars to end up having to go junkyard scavenging for a buncha crap, I can prolly find a 5afe for that price out here myself. The 4AFE is rare though, that's why I was checking out these importer guys.
Please, any knowledge on these swaps/replacements is greatly needed, I'm not rolling in cash, and can't afford to screw this up
