1983 celica with Intermittent Starting

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1983 Toyota Celica GTS. The car has a starting problem. I can turn the key three times and nothing will happen then the fourth and the car will start. It seems when I put the manual transmission in neutral the car starts easier. I believe the car's starter is shot but I am looking for a second opinion. Also, If you guys agree is there anything I need to remember to do while I change the starter out. I got the car up on jacks right now, stopped to double check with the crew!

Thanks for any help you guys can provide,

Wolf

Just to clarify. Everything comes on, the car will not crank. When I turn the key to start nothing happens.

Thanks

is the battery good? and check all the conections on the starter to see if they are loose. to check the starter you can take it out and bench test it. if you can kick out the bendex with a battery and jumper cables and a screwdriver then the starter is good. remember to clean all the conections before you put the starter back on.

I took the starter out and tested it. It operated properly and sounded good. Could it be in the switch or contacts in the steering column. Thanks I will check the wiring again, maybe I missed something. Thanks for the help.
