USA Headlight switch ?

I'm a newbie to this site and this may seem like a real stupid question, but here goes.
I recently acquired a 1992 Celica convertible and was noticing that I have 4 positions on my headlight switch. #1, #2, #3 and #4. #1 is off. #3 is parking lights, #4 is headlights. What is supposed to come on when I switch from off (#1) to #2? I looked at the Haynes manual that I have and in the wiring diagram, it calls it 'hold' and says that D and U should be energized. What are D and U. The only thing that I can figure out is that if you turn the headlights on, then turn it back to #2, the headlights go off, but they don't close. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me a little batty.

theyre working fine the #2 position is just to keep the headlights up im guessing to avoid having to make the poor little guys from having to go up and down every time you want to turn them on and off. (i hate flip up headlights) gotta give it ta toyota they got some good ideas but sumtimes they overdo it.

2nd position is to hold the lights up (after you've already switched them ON obviously).

I usually leave the lights up when I'm running short errands at night and when I know its not going to be long until I get back in the car. The less I use the flip up system the better.
