Does anyone know if the 3SGE has hydraulic lifters? me and a friend just did an engine swap and the newer engine has a slight knock... could be a few things. just wondering about the lifters
Not to get too far off topic here, but out of curiosity if the knock is very minor and it just needs new bearings, then how involved is the procedure.?
on my 90 celica (5sfe) it looks like you can theoretically just remove the oil pan and should be able to just reach in and unbolt the connecting rods and caps... or am i missing something ?
it has solid lifters, but the s block especially the one with the g pistons in it is famous for the pistons flopping around when they are cold, and they might even make a little noise when warmed up Toyota has a TSB out on this

as for chat programs, they have firewalled off all the "non essential" ports on our network server so they dont work any more. something about people slacking off too much instead of working *mutter*
will find a way around it soon hehe
hey well i replaced the crank barrings for the one piston but now apparently the piston is hitting the valve. any ideas? wrong barrings perhaps? it says 87-89 celica... please all and any info would be helpful

The piston is hitting the valve? In that case you need a complete engine rebuild, or cheaper yet, a lower mileage replacement engine.
I currently had a engine rebuild done on my 3sge engine. The knocking sound was the main bearings which fried the crank shaft. I paid about $5000 thats including labor for a complete rebuilt block that I had bored over at 20 and new performance pistons. Now I have a ton of compression and the engine has to be run on 93 Octane or higher to eliminate some low RPM pinging. There are lifters in this engine and the Shims is the tuff part to make sure you get your proper compression. My mechanic had to measure all sixteen of the shims and order diffrent sizes to compensate for the age and wear of the block....
