Since this is your first conversion, it should be one that isn't too hard.
The 1UZFE and 3SGTE have been done in an '83 before but they are complicated.
The F20C would also be complicated.

The 3T-GTE wouldn't be too hard as long as you can make some engine mounts.
This was sold in Japan as the TA63 and TA64.
If you are real lucky then TE71 or TE72 Corolla engine mounts *might* fit.

The simplest is to keep the 22R and convert it to manual.
These are simple but strong engines with tons of low down torque.
Once the power robbing auto is out of the way, you might be suprised at what a stock motor can do.
And as Racer said, they can be warmed up pretty good with a cam and exhaust upgrade.
