Odd thermostat job?

Hey guys! Im in need of some help. My friends 87 Toyota Van's coolant overflow tank seemed to bu bubbling and overflowing a bit, but there were no visible bubbles (to indicate head gasket leak) and it was not over heating. I replaced the thermostat with a new one from autozone (NONE of which had the (float?) valve thing on them. I installed it and after a while filled the coolant back up and took it for a drive. I overheated in less than a mile. I put the old thermo back in because there seemed to be no problem with that one over heating before but not the old one in the van got to the red before I got out of the neighborhood. I was suspecting the coolant overflow cap, but I cant find anyone around town that has the plastic one, just the metal one thats un kinda at the top of the engine.. If anyone has any advice or experience with this problem Id greately appreciate it and if we can get this thing back on the road by sunday that would be golden!

Thanks!
Alex
