Overdrive works, won't turn on

I just bought a 1987 Toyota minivan, and I'm just learning to work on cars. On the way home from the city, where I bought the van, I realized the overdrive feature wasn't engaging. Finally, it did engage, and it worked fine. Overdrive has not engaged since. I'm thinking there must be a switch of some kind, but I'm unable to find a reference to this in the repair manual. Has any one else experienced this or know what is going on?

I have the same problem. The OD doesn't go on and the van stays in third gear.
I heard it was some kind of switch that turns the OD on and off. But could it be the OD is worn out? anyone have any ideas?

I have a 1991 Toyota Forerunner with a similar issue. Mine is temperature related. Toyota has a overdrive switch that prevents overdrive from enganging unless the engine is at operating temperature. The instant it drops below the middle of the guage my overdrive kicks off. Sorry, I don't have a solution just a direction to look.

OK, easy fix. A sensor has gone out. It's located right next to the water temperature sensor on your head, just to left of the "Coolant Christmas tree".
You can replace it, spendy....like $90, or simply disconnect it and your transmission will return to normal. Doesn't hurt anything. Mine went out at 189,000 miles. My van now has 307,000, no probs. Been disconnected for like 5 years .

overdrive sensor etc.

Maybe it would help to know what the colors of the wires going to the sensor are. Would a non-functioning speedometer also make the OD not work?

I also have a 1987 Toyota van and it will not go into over drive.

Can anyone help out with this? I can not find a diagram of what is what under the hood. What sensor is what. There are several going to the so called tree but I don't know what is what. I did find a broken vacuum line near the tree and the lines are from the fuel injection or throttle area but would really like to get this up and running again. Please send H E L P !
Thank you.

Still no Overdrive on 87 Van.

I'm still not getting my overdrive to engage on my 87 Toyota Van. I took off all but one of the wired plugs from the christmas tree of the cooling system and it did not engage. The one plug that I could not get off broke but the connection were still good.
Can anyone tell me where to get a diagram of all the wires in the engine compartment? Or, What else it may be that the overdrive will not engage? the relay under the shift lever is clicking when I push the OD button but no overdrive. Need help bad. Thank you for sending any knowledge my way.

I got the OD working and it is so nice to have it on the highway. It was a solenoid on the trans. I had a local transmission shop repair it with a new one for $120.00 Now I am back on the road again happy as can be : )

Please help me figure out how to get my o/d working

Hey gang,

My O/D recently stopped working. The transmission seems fine otherwise and I'd like to try disconnecting the sensor on the christmas tree that was mentioned earlier in the thread. Can anyone post a photo of which one it is? Anything else I should try?

Thanks,

robotvan

my dad had an 84 van and ours had an OD on/off switch... we replaced it and it worked fine. the switch was on the console I think either behind the PRNDL case or on the side, can't remember... it was like 15yrs ago.

Disconnecting the sensor solved my problem

I figured out what ol_68 was saying about disconnecting the sensor and found a photo and thread about it on Toyota Van People too. Here's the info for people that have the same problem in the future: http://www.toyotavanpeople.com/forum...erdrive+sensor

It's the grey plastic connector that goes onto the brass sensor right below the other brass sensor.
