=================================================
STEP 1: REMOVE WIPER BLADE ASSEMBLY
* Lift the wiper blade arm away from the window until it stands in the "service" position.
* Turn the blade assembly 90 degrees counter-clockwise to disengage the assembly from the arm:
* Now, simply lift the entire blade assembly out of the notch.
STEP 2: REMOVE OLD INSERT
* Note the three sets of tabs that hold the blade in place. Grab the blade between two sets of tabs, and pull outward to remove the blade from one set of end tabs. Them simply slide the entire insert out to separate it from the assembly.
* There are two silver metal strips that are on each side of the blade. Remove these. You will reuse them.
STEP 3: INSTALL NEW INSERT
* Slide in the metal strips into the sides of the new insert. They do not "lock" in place or even hold tightly, so you may have to keep sliding them back into the insert as you reinstall the rubber to the assembly.
* Note the arm assembly has two distinct sections. One stationary, and one hinged pivoting arm. I recommend sliding the new blade into the pivoting section first, as seen here:
* Then, simply bend the blade and slide it into the third set of tabs. Be sure the tabs are not getting caught in the channel with the metal strips, but instead, are holding the blade down. The blade should slide freely back and forth within the assembly.
STEP 4: REINSTALL THE BLADE ASSEMBLY
* To reinstall the assembly on the wiper arm, simply connect the U-notch on the wiper arm to the small round crossbar within the wiper assembly. Then tilt the assembly back down (90 degrees clockwise) and push it to engage the clips that hold it in place.
I changed mine this morning and found out that I would have to go to a dealer to get the blades since I have a 2005 Matrix and go figure, they don't sell it as an over the counter product.
Anyway, I bought a blade replacement from Part Source (Canadian Tire has it too) that is cut-to-fit. The size of the blade is 11'' but you must make sure to match the length of the cross section of the blade rather than the length (I was tempted to buy the one which said 11'' to 18'' on the package but the cross section was too large). I recommend if you are going to use this approach, take the blade off first and bring it into the store to match it.
In removing the blade, I pulled the assembly into service mode as mentioned in the previous post but didn't remove the assembly. I just bent back the blade on one of the end holders (there are 3: 2 on either end and one in the middle). The blade slides out after an end is removed.
To reinstall, I cut the blade to size and inserted into the end and centre clip. I had to do a size adjustment at this point. The I pushed up on the 3rd clip to force it back in. I did this rather than bending and sliding it from the end since the blade does not have the metal strip through it and will bend the plastic. Once it is in, rock the blade back and forth to make sure it doesn't fall out the end.
Worked great for me. I now have a clean back windshield. Best part: package I bought has 2 blades which are 24'' each so I get 4 refills. Cost: ~$7 CAD so under $2 a replacement.
Here is the part number if you want to try this yourself:

Didn't go to the dealer
??????? Me confused. You state your dealer doesn't sell it as over the counter product. Then, chuckles mentions that he never heard of a dealer not stocking them. Then you state you didn't go to the dealer. Why not? They're over the counter, in stock items for $3.25. What more do you want?
O$K, poorly referenced pronoun on my part! Canadian Tire didn't have anything over the counter so I had to make one myself. Didn't check the dealer since I rarely go there (I typically think they are crooks IMHO). For ~4, I will make an exception.
Good to know they're only $3.25. The snow and cold we had today and yesterday tore my blade in certain parts. It only wipes the center 4" now. There's no contact on either side of that!!!
Ok, I need a new rear wiper on my 04 XRS No parts stores carry a refill, and my dealer doesn't stock one either! ill have to order one.
that upsets me a little that they don't bother to carry one, what is mine the only one tearing apart?
