Howdy y'all- Just had to spend over $700. to replace all 4 Continental tires which came factory-installed on my '05 Matrix. (Bought Brand New in Houston, TX) The front were worst, but ALL had extreme, uneven wear and tread loss.
The dealership's trying to place blame on low inflation and lack of an alignment. (Even though I had my car into the dealer 4 TIMES in the past 6 MONTHS for balance and rotation because of increasing noise and rough ride!) At NO time did they EVER mention tire wear-
In addition, Continental (Tire makers) refused to even CONSIDER that their tires were less than satisfactory or, possibly, defective! Of course, I will never again, purchase Continental tires and, instead, put Michelin all around...
I would like to hear from any other Matrix/ Toyota owners who have had a similar experience so that we can, perhaps, get some restitution and satisfaction from Toyota, Continenetal or BOTH!
Thanks for your feedback and help! Happy New Year too!
tell them to fix the tires that u paid good money for, tell them u coulda easily gotten something better like a yaris but u choose the matrix and they should respect that or u will goto another brand in the future.

Hmmm, Toyota hasn't issued a TSB on those tires yet? About a week ago, in the GenVibe forum, somebody posted the TSB by Pontiac allowing Vibe owners to receive new tires (I think Goodyear Eagle RSA's). Though I doubt it would work, it might be worth your time to start harping Toyota about this (that is, the GM TSB tire recall) and see what happens. Doesn't seem right that this tire has a known defect and you are being forced to replace them at your own expense.
Here's the link to the GenVibe discussion/TSB info:
We own a 03 Vibe that came with the Continental Tires. Got really good mileage out of them, 30,000 miles to be exact. The secret is to inflate them to just under the max on the sidewall, and rotate every 6,000 miles. Still had enough tread to pass inspection when replaced.
I just bought a 2006 Matrix and the tires on it are my one big complaint. I have Continental's on it and they ride and handle like crap. I have no idea about tread wear on them yet but I'm already looking forward to them wearing out so I can replace them. If you get any kind of resolution Howdy please post here in case my tires go bad quickly too.
Some Toyota Dealers will do what they can to help resolve these issues ( I know we've replaced a few sets of different brands) but they aren't required to because like brake pads, tires are a wearable item and there is no written warranty (from Toyota OR Continental) on them.
Maybe your selling dealer will help and maybe they wont but at least ask them for a goodwill or maybe a discount on a new set. You've got service records on your vehicle and tires and they should take that into account.

i concur. i have an 06 trix and ive noticed poor traction. it's actually in the shop right now due to a blown trany (at 5K miles, im a little worried about that). anyway, the dealer gave me a new camry to borrow while my car is being fixed, so i cant be too mad about it; makes me miss my old 95 camry.
but anyway, yes, bad traction, not too pleased with the tires, but im not sure what we can do.
I have a 03 Trix that came with Goodyear Eagle RSA's, traction was pretty good on snow but they wore our at 30,000. Put a set of BFG Tracton T/A's on because a web page praised them of having supeior snow tracton. THEY SUCK for snow traction, spending the extra money next time on the Eagles.
I would like to add my .02 here. OEM tires just usually suck. Period. The tires are made specifically to "enhance" the ride characteristics of the vehicle to sell it. Usually the treadware ratings on OEM are much lower than the same AEM tire. Vehicle PSI recommendations are set to enhance ride quailty, braking, and handling. I go by a +3 PSI principle at X degrees F outside temp for the lowest temp expected in my area for a given season. If the low will be no lower than 20 degrees F, I will set my XRS tires to 35 PSI when its 20 degrees (obviously this is adjust at a diff temp). That way, even first thing in the morning, my tires are where they need to be. You can adopt a "zeroed at X degree" pressure as well. Your tires should never be under inflated if you check them. If there is a +/- 1 PSI change for every 10 degree temp change, then if you set your tires in your warm (say 60 degree) garage, then you will already be 3 PSI low when you leave in the morning if the outside temp is 30 degrees. Same holds true if you set your tires to recommended during the afternoon temps and then drive in the am. I know pressure increases as tire heat increases but why risk it? Also, very few people know that you should increase tire pressure if you do extended driving at high speeds (70+) for S and T rated tires. Tires rated V, Y, W, and Z have their own pressure increase requirements at different speeds. Anyway, I think we should expect crappy tires OEM and just replace them with what we want when they wear out. BTW, the Goodyear RSA's are VERY expensive for what you get. Search Tirerack.com and get your money's worth.
I have been reading allot in this forum and it is very helpful. Allot of you people really know your stuff. I already talked to my Local Tire guy and we are going to trade out my "new" Corolla tires as soon as I pick up the car from the Dealer.
I am going to go with Cooper Touring SLEs. They seemed to run great on my two Buicks. Last about 70K miles too.

Sorry to post in this forum. But when i saw the thread I had to.
Ive got a 05 X- runner with 13,200 miles on it, and it came with bridgestone potenza's Reo50a and they have cracks and splits and the tires are still under warranty and they will only pro-rate them. They will give me 142.00 a tire, But the problem is only 2 have the cracks. When i asked to do all 4 they said f*ck no. they want me to pay full price for the other 2 it will cost me 1080.00 for all 4

Sorry dude, you're getting somewhat hosed. I was looking at maybe trading my 04 taco in for the x-runner until I saw what kind of rubber was wrapped on those rims. I spend over a grand on my matrix tires and one car is enough! Look at the Tire Rack for replacements. Personally, I would do the two that they will replace and put them on the front (for nothing more than hydroplane resistance). Use the old two for the rear. They won't last you much beyond 20k anyway so start saving now.

Run, don't walk away from the Integrity line if that's what's on your Corolla. They suck, suck, and more suck. I am a GoodYear guy but those are not their best.
Do a little research at TireRack.com before you buy anything.
