I'm purchasing a 2006 Matrix (base w/power, etc...). The only one immediately available --- apparently it is hard to find base with power, etc... has a painted pinstripe. The dealer said they can remove it without notice and promised that if I can see anything upon inspection, I can reject the car. I also got the 9 yr paint fade, scratch warranty. Has anyone had this done on a new car? Are there any lasting effects?

I'd be willing to bet it isn't painted on, but is only a decal vinyl strip... Yes it can be removed without a trace or problems.
We had the pinstripe removed on our Highlander before taking possession. I "think" it was tape, not paint, but can't be sure. The HL had a few other cosmetic (added profit) items on it, but we didn't pay for any of the extra stuff. Our Iowa City car was a dealer trade from St Louis. It stayed on the local lot for several weeks while other HLs arrived and were sold. We got a $2,200 discount plus the 3.9% 60-month financing.
I had paint protection on a previous vehicle and did NOT like it. It just didn't shine like a wax job. The surface didn't feel as smooth. They provide you with the treatment stuff to apply... IMHO, it's just snake oil and I'll never NEVER again be suckered with paint or fabric protection. A good quality wax job is much MUCH better. I also buy a couple of cans of Scotch Guard and apply it myself.

Dealer says it is painted, not cheaper vinyl.
About the 9yr rust protection/paint fade/scotch guard...is this a terrible deal? I do a lot of kayaking/biking so I'm constantly loading and unloading gear. I'm expecting the car to get scratched up which is why I went with the paint and scratch protection. Anyone else have an opinion on this? Waste of money?
What about extended warranty instead of 3 yrs and 36k, for $1500, 6yrs and 100k. Is this worth it? I'm new to all this.
i just removed the pinstripe from my new vehicle w/ no problem. it was like a sticker. if you can stick your finger nail underneath it, you should be able to peel it right off.
i was also able to remove the CAMRY & LE decals on the car. all you need is fishing line to work it through it and then take the sticky stuff off w/ an adhesive remover. if you do this, make sure you wash the area after you use the adhesive remover.
I'd agree with everyone here that i'm 99% sure it's a sticker pinstripe.
Can you see the car before you agree to purchase (ie, before they do the pinstripe removal)? If it's a sticker, I'd actually head to another dealership and not buy it from who you are dealing with now, just on the principle of being lied to like that.
You said you're geting scratch protection..... scotch guard is not scratch protection.... and i'd read the rust protection warrentee before buying it....often, it's about as useful as a dead skunk in your car.
As for the extended warrentee, personally, I wouldn't get it because if something is going to break, it's probably going to break before then. If it breaks after that, it's probably cheaper to get it replaced elsewhere anyways. I am interested in the price of the 6 yr, 100k warrentee tho...if it's a reasonable price (under $2000), then I MIGHT consider it, but even then, I'd read the fineprint because often you need to follow very strict rules for the warrentee to be valid.

Dealers say a lot of shlt, believe it if you want... I have never seen a factory paint job with painted on pinstriping before, and I've been around a long time... If it is painted on, the dealer cannot just take it off as it should have a clearcoat over it. If it were painted on and they removed it I would pass on the car as the integrity of the clearcoat has been compromised and will never be as good as a factory paint job again.
Ask the dealer how they remove the painted pin stripe.

Believe me it will be a vinyl decal...

The dealer said it was painted on at the dealership where the car was originally. He sent a "flatbed" to pick it up, for which he didn't charge me. He also showed me a Sienna in the showroom that also had a painted pinstripe. Looked painted to me (I'm no expert though). The dealer said his detailing guy can take it off no problem and it will not compromise the clearcoat. I'm supposed to pick the car up on Monday with the understanding that for any reason if I can tell that the factory paint has been compromised, I can reject the car. The main thing I'm worried about is the integrity of the paint down the road. If it does compromise the clearcoat, will I be able to tell now?
What do you think?
Thanks for the reponses.
the numbers for the car were:
Base manual + FE CL CK PO CF rear bumper protector = $16490 - $900 rebates = $15590
I agree that vinyl will come off and not be a problem. I'm leary about being able to remove a painted stripe... To give you my 2-centss on a few of your other questions. Do the interior yourself. Use scotch guard (it's up to $8/can now and will take 2 or 3 cans). Wax you vehicle. It's better than the "teflon" snake oil they will put on. You just have to wax the car every 3 or 4 months. A pain?... it's not that bad. Waxes have come a long way and are very easy to use.
Now for the extended warranty. DO NOT BUY the 6YR 100K from your dealer @$1,500. That's full list price. My dealer offered to sell it for $920. Check with Toyota of Greenfield (Greenfield, MA) and get with Troy D. He will be cheaper and it will be the factory warranty Toyota Extra Guard PLATINUM protection with $0.00 deductible. (I'm in Iowa and not affiliated with him other than he's working with me on warranties for my Matrix and Highlander.) Do NOT believe any dealer that tells you their private warranty is better than the factory warranty. That's BS!!! To many of the privates have gone out of business and left buyers with NOTHING!

I think your saleman is full of shlt. A " detailing guy " at a dealership isn't going to remove a painted on pinstripe. The " detailing guys " at most dealerships are young kids making minimum wage washing and waxing cars.
It looks like you want the car with no pinstripe on it.
The dealer will be able to remove the vinyl pin stripe that is already on the car without damaging the paint.
No worrys buy the car.
Tell them you want to watch them remove the painted on pin stripe though... I promise it isn't painted, and they will just peel it off and buff it out.
