engine servise light

While riding to work today with my neighbor it was my first time in his Matrix. Its like a 2005 model small wagon. I really dont know the model Matrix. Anyway the service engine soon or engine requires service light was on and he said has been on for some time. Its not the check engine light so what does this mean??? any help greatly appreciated.

Could be the maintenance to light saying it's time to change the oil.

However I cannot recall if the matrix had one or not.

This light comes on first just before 5000 miles blinking to remind him he is approaching the mileage for an oil change. When he reaches 5000 miles after the last reset it will come on steady, It is a reminder to change the oil. It doesn't monitor the condition of the oil. If he has changed the oil this needs to be reset in accordance with the owners manual procedure.

1. If he hasn't changed the oil he needs to do that now.

2. He needs to reset the maintenance light IAW the Owners manual. The process will start over...

Doesn't anyone read the owners manual besides me?

i have the same thing with my new 06 camry standard. the oil was already changed at 3000 miles. i did kinda glance through the owners manual to see what was up with the light and there was the explanation about it but i dont recall reading a way to "re-set" it. ill do more than glance at the owners manual now,specifically for how to reset the light. its an annoying feature i think.
the car is great and fun with the manual transmission!
