Matrix XR power locks work with hatch?

Confused newbie, here.

I bought a brand new '04 Matrix with the complete sport package. LOVED IT! Unfortunately, it was totalled in an accident a few weeks ago. I recently had a chance to purchas a like-new '03 in the same sexy dark blue and I jumped at the chance. Now I notice the subtle differences. My '04 came with a standard key fob that popped the hatch window, locked and unlocked ALL the doors including the hatch and, of course, the panic button.

The '03 I replaced it with is also an XR, but it didn't come with the factory key fob. Instead, it came with an off brand as if someone had something installed or they lost the originals and replaced it with these.

Here's the confusing part. The '03 is missing the button on the dash that pops the hatch window, and the power lock buttons neither lock nor unlock the hatch door; I have to use the key to do so. Naturally, the key fob doesn't operate these either.

My question is: where there '03 XR's that didn't come equipped with power locks that operate the hatch door? If not, did somebody botch some wiring while re-coding the power locks for this new key fob? If the latter is true, where do I look for loose wiring? Interestingly enough, the panic button DOES work.

Any insight from some of you experienced Matrix owners will be greatly appreciated. I get the feeling that my dealer is blowing smoke up my butt on this matter.

Although I thought that all XR's came with factory keyless entry, it's possible this one didn't, and someone had an aftermarket system installed, or maybe it's a base model and someone bought an XR emblem and put it on. A Toyota dealer can run the vin to see exactly what options the car was built with.

Base models have black door handles. That's probably the easiest sign that it isn't an XR.

I believe there were XR's that didn't come w/ power locks. Someone posted this recently.
