Driving in Snow

Got a few question for those who drive the base model Matrix in snow country. Is there enough ground clearance and how does it handle. Anyone install 15" Corolla wheels with snow tires? Did you install an engine block heater? Any other tips or ideas for preparing a Matrix for snow country would be great. Thank you in advance. Stuart

If it works, the 15" wheels & snow tire would be a great idea. The traction with the standard tires realy isn't all that great. A block heater is a good idea too, if like instant heat in the winter. I was in Wisconsin back in February, and the temp was -20, my Matrix did start with a few additional cranks than usual, but waited a longer for any heat to produce. I did not do anything out of the ordinary to prepare for the winter, just make sure all your regular maintanace is up to date.

The best thing you could do is invest in a good set of snow tires. My Matrix is lowered w/ Hotchkis springs and I really haven't had any problems w/ plowing all these yrs. Sure, I'll face some plowing during a fresh snowfall. Luckily, the streets in Toronto get plowed quick enough that you won't have to face it again the following day.

I don't have a block heater either and I still have my original battery. Car still starts fine.

I have 16" winter Toyo's, great tires! I think I shoulda gone with 15" but hey, its done...
As for cold starts, Mines a 2003 XR, still has the original battery, and I have never had any issues starting the car, even at -40 weather, she'll turn over slow, but always starts for me... I really do love her
